1995 Suburban K1500 grinding noise

OK, now it has gotten bad. From the left rear brake
area, there is a loud grinding noise. When driving,
there is a clunk, almost like when you have a bad u-
joint, but the joins are fine. Along with the
clunking noise, there is a bad vibration. When you
apply the brakes and stop the truck, there is a
really loud grinding noise coming from the left rear
wheel area and you can see the rim shaking from the
grinding noise. Any help as where to start looking
would be helpful.
 
Wheel bearing is out. (I think it is a simi floating design and if left to grind will destroy the housing and axle. The wheel can fall off. Jim
 
Not a floating axle. The outer bearing runs directly on the axle shaft. If the bearing is failed, eventually it will cut the axle shaft and you will loose the wheel doing more damage in the process.
 
Get the drum off and check the brakes, sounds like the parking brake has stuck and screwed things up.
 
Get that drum off and find out.

Probably gonna take a drum, pin and spring kit, cylinder, as well as the brake shoes.

If the axle has gone south, you would have been hearing a "rough" noise coming from that area for a long, long time, BUT once they break thru the hard surfacing, it doesn't take long to absolutely chop that axle in two.

First order of business is to jack 'er up and see.

The only way to know for sure is to tear into it and find out, or take it to a mechanic.

I really don't understand the whole "stand there and scratch your head, then go drive it some more" attitude here.
 
Some more helpful information, to me it sounds as though it may be in transmission. When pulling into shop, the loud grinding sound would come and go, if I put it in neutral it would slowly go away. I haven't had a chance yet to pull the back wheel, I think I'm going to get it up on stands and see if I can determine where the grinding is coming from.
