Diesel tuning box

I see lots of diesel tuning boxes for sale here in the UK mainly on Ebay claiming power increase, torque increase as well as fuel savings for not much expenditure (around $150). What are the thoughts on these are they any good or just a waste of time. Do they have an effect on reliability. I want to fit one to a Dodge Nitro with the 2.8 diesel CRD engine similar to that fitted to the Jeep.

Hi Bill,

Lots of Dodge ram trucks chipped in this part of the world (both 5.9 and newer 6.7 models). All claim to give geater horsepower/torque, and claim greater fuel milage... probably depends on how it gets driven, lots of them smoke a lot here, but they're driven by younger "men" who seem to like to use all the available horsepower away from every road junction....

I've no experience in them on smaller engines (almost unavailable here - sprinter vans/voltswagon jettas are about the only thing with small diesels over here) but i see no reason why they shouldn't work...

should have addded that they all void the warrenty on the trucks here Bill... and i know that some can cause problems with reliablity, but is that due to driver error or just trying to extract too much horsepower and then using all the horsepower all of the time?

You can get these claims on anything, I would like to see a genuine scientific result before attaching anything.tested and proven.Drop a note to the Manufacturer, if known.

Hi Bill!

I have one on my Ford Super Duty 7.3, I've never set it anywhere above tow safe mode, I tow a lot, both weight and often. Does everything they claim, better mileage, more torque and HP. It is the lowest setting yet it is very much noticed when on.

When I installed mine I added a exhaust temp gauge, it does run hotter, but stays within the range of acceptable.

I have an edge programmer in my 01 5.9 cummins dodge. I love it. It did exactly what they said it would do. I gained HP torque and gained some fuel mileage. I think a gained an extra 3or 4 miles to the gallon or I think in your case it would be Liters. Your reliability is compromised if you drive it like you stole it. Everybody Ive ever known to have troubles with programmers are the guys out hot roddin there diesels like there a muscle car. My thought on them are they are worth the money and good thing to have. I would suggest a good set of gauges to monitor your exhaust gas temp and boost pressure. You dont have to but not a bad idea to have.Oj is correct that here in the states a programmer will indeed void a warranty.

I think pert-neer every diesel pickup around here has had something done to it. Till you have ridden in a 600 hp 3/4 ton pickup you will not believe it. Then you can set it back to econ mode and beat the factory mileage at least 3 mpg. The good programers also keep it in overdrive longer, probably why they get better mileage. If you get the right one it plugs in under your steering wheel to the 12 pin connecter. If you have to have it worked on just unplug it and no one is the wiser.

Check the mileage with a GPS to know the actual distance and filling to the brim at the fuel pumps.
The re-programmers are notorious for stretching the actual mileage.

I chipped every diesel I have owned, make them run better. You just have to take it a little easy to keep from tearing them apart. My partner chipped his F150 gas and it runs much better.

I chipped my 02 Dodge. Didn't see any increase in fuel mileage at all. I use actual miles and fill to the brim each time so not much variation in fills to calculate. It definitely will give an increase in HP. Now the bad news. Jut got done replacing the injector pump on it. No warranty on the new unit if you chip it. Most of the rebuilder-resellers will tell you that the chips will knock the VP44 out sooner than later. Check out the diesel forums and it is discussed there also. I have since unhooked mine and I have more power and better mileage than I was getting when my old pump was giving out.

i laugh at these people who buy these chipper-uppers units, then tear apart trans and transfer boxes because they are still stock parts, forgetting that motor was turned up and factory parts can't take extra power,,,i just be happy with stock settings and save the money to rebuild about300k mileage later instead of tomorrow showing off at the stop sign taking [smoking] off...

I bought a chip for my 2001 2500 diesel and there were no instructions so I don't know how to hook it up. It has two wires. Can any one tell me where the two wires go. Thanks, Roy
