What do any of you take for antacid. I mean burning stomach. Advised to get something less habit forming. Any and all suggestions appreciated. Dave(without cast iron stomach any more)

I normally can eat hot foot with impunity. On the one occasion a guy at work brought his families hot sauce to work and we took turns eating a spoonful at a time. I was so sick within an hour that they had to take me to the emergency room by ambulance. My insides were spasming and the doctors put some very happy stuff into my IV, but I don't remember much after that until my wife had me down the road. I don't know exactly what drug I took for my one case of severe heartburn, but it made me very happy. The cheif told my wife when he called to let her know that I was on my way to the ER, that he didn't know if I would make it, but, that seems a bit extreme.

I buy the generic of it. I don't take it as they recommend though. I 'll take one when I feel a good case of HB coming on and then might not need another pill for 3 or 4 days, depending on what I eat. I should go in and get checked out, but I'm sure they'd just prescribe the stuff anyway. I can make a 28 count box last a good 3 months.

I take prilosek. Had reflux, gerd, acid, heartburn...ate tums and doctor gave me generic prilosek.. all of it stop on the first pill. One in the morning and that's it. No more anything. No reflux, no gerd, no acid no nothing.

I use previcid they are now available over the counter. A little expensive , but work much better than prilosec for me. Take 2 , last 24 hrs.

When I have an upset stomach, I take a teaspoon of baking soda in half a glass of cold water, followed by another glass of water to wash the awfull taste out of my mouth. I use the same concoction to clean the corrosion off battery terminals. If it can neutralize battery acid it should be able to handle stomach acid.

I take omeprazole daily and it works good for me. try asking your dr for a prescrption your insurance might help pay for it then.

Was buying the Kirkland brand of omeprazole at Costco...Does a great job; one in the morning at least a 1/2 hour before I eat and I'm good for the day. But them our doctor gave us a prescripton for the same stuff through the Costco pharmacy. A LOT cheaper that way.

Famotidine is an acid reducer that is about 30 cents per pill. They are generic from all major drug stores Pepsid AC is a branded product. Read up on the differences between it and prilosec and the related issues with prilosec and choose wisely. Jim

I tried the Omneprazole but it made me feel irritable after I took it for awhile, doctor changed me to Lansoprazole and it agrees with me just fine.

barnE, and others . . .

How do you know if it's too much acid or not enough acid to digest your food, or you ate too much and the acid is going up the oesophagus and burning?

When I get an upset stomach, not knowing what caused it (over eating), I use Bragg (RAW) Apple Cider Vinegar (with the Mother) seems to work for me.

Some years ago I knew a guy that drank way too much beer and ate Tums all the time and groaned with pain, he could have had an ulcer.

zantac 75..... no perscription needed . one before breakfast .i have had most listed below for the same reasons for years . the latest the drs have tried to push is nexum

i use Gaviscon liquid when my GERD acts up...usually takes a bottle's worth over a week but lets me heal in that time.

Looking at the subject from a different angle. For years I suffered from acid reflux almost every night no matter what I had eaten. About five years ago I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and put on a CPAP machine and my reflux disappeared.

(quoted from post at 00:48:46 12/17/11) they never worked well and there were times they didn't work at all.
ay attention to what Janicholson said. Those prilosec/Omeprazol/etc. drugs eat the calcium out of your bones. What Janicholson said + Tums = Pepcid AC without the bone problems & much cheaper than others.

I take the generic Zantac 75 or 150 every night before bed. If I'm not sleeping much I also take one in the morning. Costco or Sams has them cheap. If it's burning grab a glass of buttermilk for quick relief.

I've been on precription omeprazole for 15 years take it before breakfast.works great to counteract the artheristis drug I take. Sometimes I will take another in the evening if I have greasey or Mexican food.

I've tried both Prilosec and Prevacid and although both work for me the Prevacid, so far, seems to work the best. I've found for me that if I take them on the recommended everyday schedule that the effects don't seem to last very long after the last pill is gone. If I just take one pill every couple of days and let the effects basically help my body adjust then I can usually go a year or more before taking another round. In the meantime I maintain my system with ginger which is supposed to be a good cure for an upset stomach. I say I use ginger but to be honest I've tried the real stuff and the artifificial stuff and it seems like any brand of ginger ale, ginger snap cookies, etc all seem to work just as well wether they are made with 'real' ginger or not.

I take nnalert [omneprazole] 20 mg per day, does the trick. Astra Zeneca. here in Oz it is only available by prescription. I was taking 40 mg but the Doc made a mistake and gave me 20 mg.
it works.

Actually it"s not the only mistake he made, said I had a hernia {inguinal], the scan showed something also, just back from the knife.
I DON"T HAVE ONE.
At least he didn"t bury his mistake, but I don"t know whether to bury him.

I've been taking Nexiun for years. Two years ago I participated in a clinical trial for a LINX bracelet. It is a bracelet of a few small magnets installed laparoscopically just above the stomach around the esophagus to help keep the sphincter closed when not swallowing to supposedly stop acid from seeping into the esophagus. It didn't work and I still have to take nnalert. TDF

barnE. A teaspoon of "Baking Soda" in a small glass of water about 8 to 10 ozs. works for me but I don't have a chronic problem just now and then.

Do not play with it, for if yours is a chronic problem Acid Reflux can cause major problems with your stomach and esophagus.

I take the prilosec 40mg XR, once a day. Been taking something from GERD since 1995. Started with protonix, went to prevacid, then prilosec 20, then 40, now the 40 XR. Complications of GERD and bleeding ulcers are the second leading cause of death in my family tree. Not messing around with them. The prilosec works and works well for me in the capsule prescription formulation. The OTC, even at 2x dose doesnt.

I have been using probiotics for several years. I get mine from the Conklin Co in Shakopee, Mn. They sell a lot of different lines and I like their health products. The probiotics are good active bacteria that take care of re flux for me and also help in natural resistance to a lot of other diseases. Questions? HTH. Have a merry Christmas!

Prescription Omneprazole from the Veterans
Administration cost my $9 a month, or $27 for
a 3 months supply!

I get the generic 6 week supply at Walgreens or Shopko. Take it daily. So do all my brothers. Went in to the doc a little over a year ago because of my heartburn (daily) and told him of my brothers. He gave me a prescription, but it's cheaper for me to buy the big 6 week packs of the generic than toi keep getting a monthly prescription.

My oldest brother let it go a little too long and developed Barret's Esophogus. That's where the tissues in your throat start to morph, and the next stage is cancer. He caught it in time and now it's going back to normal, but it is surely not something to ignore.

My mom's friend just lost a brother to esophogial cancer. Bascially starved to death the last couple days because he couldn't eat and they couldn't do anything else for him. If you're too stubborn to go to a doctor, atleast keep ahead of your heartburn with a pill or it could be your future too.

After years of heartburn and Zantac I found out by trial and error I can't drink milk. Quit drinking milk after 70 some years and haven't used Zantac since. I can enjoy spicy food and don't bother. I love milk but no more.

Good idea on the H Pylori. My wife had it this summer. Can be detected with a blood test. She went around a couple treatments before getting tested for it. Takes some pretty strong antibiotics to get rid of it but they worked.

I had been having a lot of trouble with heartburn. I used all the different pills and got to where I needed them daily.

The problem is that when you use stuff that reduces acid, your body compensates by making more of it, so you can essentially get dependent on the stuff.

What I did was get some fast acting liquid stuff. I only used it if the burn was bad and I'd just take a quick swig from the bottle. After limiting my use of the acid reducing stuff for a few weeks I barely needed it anymore.

Also, avoid alcohol or at least limit how often you consume it. That aggravates heartburn like nobody's business.

I had this problem for several years and took prilosec everyday. I no longer take it and have not had to for about a year. Why? I stopped over eating and I cut way back on white bread. Also, eat earlier in the evening at least 4-5 hours before you go to bed and don't drink anything 1 hour before bed. You want your stomach somewhat empty before you go to bed. I would encourage you to examine everything you eat and drink and write it down along with the time when you consume it. Chances are you'll be surprised. The reason we have these digestive problems is because of excessive consumption, bad timing, and bad foods.

Have been using 20 mg. prescription Omeprazole 1/2 hour before main daily meal for several years. Without it I tend to cough a lot. A big downside to not controlling stomach acid is that it may cause esophageal cancer, not good.
