loudest tractor

I agree 100% on the Olivers. Never owned one, but I've never owned a tractor that was as loud as those Olivers, even when running a straight pipe.

Lots of good topics on here lately. Got me thinking, what is the loudest tractor?

My initial guess would be a GM 2 cycle Oliver. Like the 1950, 1900 and some of the Super 99's and a Massey Ferguson as well.

Heard some of the V8's in the IH 1468/1568 as well as MF 1150/1155 and Oliver 2255 can get pretty loud with the dual stacks.

Whats the loudest tractor youve owned? and the loudest one youve heard?

Heard a story at the Oliver show in Wooster this summer that the whole township knew when a guy with a 1900GM Oliver would start chopping corn...

One of the loudest tractors I remember was a Deutz air cooled diesel. That thing sounded like a tornado coming across the field.

I dont think there is any doubt.I think the 53 series is a bit higher pitched than the 71 series. My nieghbour 3/4 mile away says if he is outside he can hear me fire up the 1900. I went thru town one sunday morning hauling 3 loads of hay , and had to give her a little throttle going up grade. Some idiot phoned saying he was going to phone the cops and have me charged with unnessary noise!

I would have to say the early JD and IH tractors that never had any muffler or exhaust stack, just a stubby open pipe out the sude of the engine. (IE, early JD D or 15-30 IH.

No wonder their were so many deaf old men. ;-)

Loudest I have heard strangly is the smallest John Deere's without a muffler right out of the manifold. The models M,440 and the like are REALLY LOUD !!!!

I live west of Wooster Ohio so I guess the wind goes the wrong way to hear that old Ollie.

If construction tractors/ equipment count, I'll vote for the Terex TS24 scraper. The front motor is a V12-71 Detroit. Rear motor dont count for the operator as he can't hear it. Two stacks with straight pipes only a few feet from your head. Spent a few years riding them. Them suckers make you ears ring for the rest of your life!

detriots are real loud. i have one in my dump truck and i love the sound of them. loudest tractor ive heard is my ford 6610 with a straight pipe which didnt last to ling because it was too loud.

A friend's 730 gas JD with a straight pipe on an irrigation pump. The sound carried over 5 miles at night, he put the mufler back on when he drove it.

Here are a couple based on my experience:

To an observer on the ground it's gotta be the Oliver 1900/1950 GM. (Wife's cousin has a 1900GM "turned up" to run at 2,600 RPM. Working hard it is easily heard 3 - 4 miles away on a calm day.)

However the loudest tractor I've had the pleasure of operating is a JD 4520 fitted with a cheap (uninsulated) aftermarket cab. Even wearing earmuffs the racket inside the cab is insane. Outside the cab however it is actually a bit quieter than its 4020 sister...

This is my vote. Looks pretty quiet just sitting here in the picture, but man is this thing loud.

I have a Deere 40T with a modified cherry bomb muffler on it and it will make your ears hurt! I have a regular stock type muffler to put on it, so I hope it will quiet it down some.

Loudest tractor we have is probably my 806 turbo diesel with a straight pipe. Second loudest is probably our John Deere 9220. Not loud in the cab but you sure can hear it purrin along from a good distance. My vote on loudest tractor would be a tie between an Ollie and a 1468 V8 International. Or the old school Terra Gators with a cummins or a cat V8

Most log skidders in the woods around here have Detroits of one size or another. Joke is that the loggers have a toggle switch on 'em- either idling, or WIDE OPEN!

Took the sound for granted back in the heyday- there was always one going, somewhere. But heard one across the valley a few weeks back, and it took me back 30 years. Wish things could still be as prosperous as they were then. . .

The sound of Detroits in the woods is like General Patton said about the smell of napalm in the morning- "It smells like. . . Victory."

i like the olivers but for me hands down,
JD 5020 w/318 deeetroit w/straight pipes.
we used to pull 8 bottom and i still have brain damage-lol.

John Deere D 7 to 1 propane pistons with dual straight stacks very painful to be around. that is my loadest by far.Paul

Massey 2805 640 cid twine straight pipes radio was not loud enough to even hear it in the cab. and at night about 3 ft. flames out of the pipe and both manifolds red hot [[what did you say ]]

The local co-op had a tandem axle Terragator with a 903 Cummins. The exhaust came out two or three feet from the turbocharger and that was it! Store windows rattled when it went down main street, maybe from the pitch of the sound more than the decibles. Neighbor had a Ford Steiger with a 903 and we could hear him all over the neighborhood. Jim

International 4386 with engine swap to a 6-71 detroit. I ran it one spring with a straight pipe. The power from that engine was much better than with a muffler.

I was working four miles from home cultivating 220 acres. My wife would step out of the house, listen and know I was working the field.

Also ran several concrete mixers with 6-71 detroits, I love that scream. You hear them for miles.

I am sure the detroits are the all time loudest, but Dads Versatile 900 with 903 cummins and dual 3" straight pipes can be heard for a long ways. Not too bad in the cab with the windows closed but outside it really bellars.

That's nothing! What about the world record holder Letourneau LT 360 scraper with 8 16V-71's of 635 HP each for over 10,000 HP! I think if you doubled the HP would be about right for the decibel rating.

Iv got everyone beat, loudest tractors iv heard are the modified pulling tractors at the fair, 4 Keith black hemies or 4 big blown Chevys with open headers pulling under load, now u dident say what kind of tractor,!! , but they r loud. Lol :)

We had a contest at the tractor show this year. My Allis WF with a 3"straight pipe won out over a Double D John Deere with two engines with each having two straight pipes!
BUT we were both beat out by a garden tractor with a two in straight pipe. That thing BIT when it would pop and backfire!

Any truck-mounted corn sheller powered by a V-8 with a straight pipe and averaging 1000 to 1200 bu./hr. I have a 1966 ford F700 with a super 330 V8 with a Cook sheller with a cap. of 2000 bu./hr. That puppy was loud at idle! Haven't had a chance to hear it under load yet. I put a cherry-bomb on it to quiet it some around the shop in town. Armand

loudest tractor on the farm is a 685 case ih. It has a muffler but is just awful for the operator. It isn't the biggest tractor we have but for some reason it's loudest in the seat. We have no cab tractors, either.
definitely not as impressive as the others you have listed!

Loudest I've heard is probably a toss between a Ford 4000 and a Ford 3930, both of which I own.
I'd wager the loudest ever built was the Bud 16V747 if we're talking about tractors equipped with mufflers. By virtue of having 16 holes of pure screaming Detroit... it would have to be loudest.
I witnessed a 16V71 on a genset many years ago and it was the first time I ever had to walk away from something because my ears hurt... and a '92' would be worse.

In stock form with standard, non altered, exhaust, the loudest tractor would probably be one equipped with the two cycle Jimmy diesel.

I used to think that too when listening to a 2-53 with the round "phart can" muffler in a Deere 435.
Installed the real Deere oval muffler and the noise went away. Now the sound of the blower and diesel knock through the block/head are the loudest sounds.

The loudest tractor I ever owned was a JD 730 diesel with a 4" straightpipe. The 1256 bellers pretty good, too.Surprisingly, the turbo 706(310 engine)is one of the quietest.Yea,the detroits probally win the noise award.

Can't really say about tractors, haven't owned many but the loudest engine, piston type I've been around was the gasser 1970 CI air cooled Continental they used in the M88 Tank Retriever.
