meyers plow oil

Finishing up installing power angle on the front blade of my 3600 ford. I'm using a meyers e-47 pump and need to know what the best oil to put in it. Temps here usually range 10-30 thru winter. My truck has a western unit and I use dextron in it but I hear meyers units are more fussy about oils in cold weather. Advice appreciated

Meyers sells oil with their name on the bottle at better part stores.Nothing more than Kwik-Lift hydraulic oil. Most guys around here, myself included, use synthetic ATF.Temps here easily get to -10F.

The Meyer's fluid has an additive for low temp operations and if memory serves me made the fluid blue in color. Dextron will serve as a substitute for the Meyer's fluid and will be fine in the temperatures you are talking about unless there is moisture in the system. I've seen the benefit of the Meyer's fluid and would put it in unless you are hard pressed for money.

One of my trucks has had an electric Meyers for 30 years. I use just about any hydraulic oil and have never had an issue. 20W, 10W, or Dextron.

It IS just a crude gear pump coupled to a DC electric motor. Nothing high-tech. At least mine isn't. I've started it at temps below zero with no issues.

Same goes for my Fisher belt-driven plow pumps.

I use DEXTRON in my Meyers and Western plows with 3 tablespoons of rubbing alchol added. Been doing that for years here in Colorado. On the 5th of December was our last plowing at 2 AM -18. No problems for years. I look at the price of the Meyers fluid versuses DEXTRON and if you break a line in the middle of the night and lose all your oil all gas stations have DEXTRON on hand.

Around 1975 I taught hydraulics at Western
Wisconsin Technical Institute, at LaCrosse WI.
We cut open 22 brands of oil filters for
evaluation,(another story) and collected samples
of hydraulic jack oil to test. That included
"Meyers" snow plow oil. We sent the oil to the
"Citgo" test lab. The reseults were that the
jack oils were all a light weight pure mineral
oil with corrosion inhibiters and some anti foam
suppressents.. Some had dyes added to make them
"look different". Viscosity was equivilent to
"about" #5 to #10 lube oil.
Meyers was different! It had a different
additive package, probably better than common
"Jack oil", and may have been slightly thinner,
(#5 viscosity, maybe, but it"s been 35 years,and
I can"t remember now) that would make it flow
better in cold weather.
However...Meyers hydraulic components are no
different from other industrial brands, execpt
that they have to work outside in cold weather.
Once the system is out of warrenty I might think
of using a less expensive brand...but since the
Meyers system only uses a quart or two of oil..
is it worth monkeying around?
I myself have a "Meyers" plow, with a "Western"
hydraulic system, on a 1965 "Scout", and it works
fine on "Dextron" ATF.

I have a Monarch electric/hydraulic. When I got it, asked the dealer what to use - his answer without hesitation: DEXTRON! Has held up fine for a number of years.
