Walmart Batteries and others

As memory serves me Walmart batteries are 36 mth batteries these days and the prices have gone up dramatically? Also I bought a motorcycle battery for my Goldwing at Advanced Auto this spring. $78 and it was covered for 3 mths. 3 1/2 months and it is dead. There is a lot of JUNK being sold these days?

Most of the little batteries are total junk anymore, Mower/GT/Bike. Virtually all are made overseas by the lowest bidder.

Does you Goldwing use one of the Y50-N18l-a batteries? MTD used to use them in all their big mowers prior to 95 when I was a tech for them. Many didn't make it through the 90 day warranty.

Both my #2 son and a nephew worked at Wal Mart while attending college. Both told me that Wal Mart employees referred to the Wal Mart "Ever-Start" batteries as "Never-Start". I haven't used Wal Mart batteries sense. I've had no problems with NAPA or Interstate batteries and NAPA has been very good to me with battery warranties even replacing one when I had a charging issue and a 2 month old battery would only measure 13.2 volts fully charged even though they knew it was caused by the charging issue not the battery. Wasn't even the the NAPA I normally do business with.

I suspect Walmart gets more clueless "do it your selfers" then other places that sell batteries. That along with a Walmart staff usually also lacking mechanical and electrical expertise - seems claims of bad batteries will be higher then usual.

I've been buying Everstart (Johnson Controls) batteries for years for tractors and diesel trucks. I've yet to get a bad one from Walmart. Interstate sells the same batteries and gets a lot more money.

Same as below

On all my years and farms and the truck and tractor business (bought a ton of batteries) I didnt see any huge difference in battery quality and longevity from Wal Mart or TSC or NAPA or Interstate Battery or Batteries Plus etc etc

Thats just MY OWN expreience with all those batteries over several years, Im sure others had different experiences

Best wishes

I have bought about three Walmart batts over the years. Mostly because I needed the get a car running and it was after hours and other places were closed. One lasted for 5+ years, another lasted just over a year and they did prorate it. The third I don't remember so must have lasted ok. I bought my mower as having a new batt and just assumed (I know about "assume")it would be proratable. I have really good luck with exide batteries and last I knew they were still prorated.

I agree.

I've used Wal Mart (Everstart) bateries in the past and have gotten as much as 10 years life WITH PROPER MAINTENANCE.

I have not bought any recently nor have I used any lawn tractor/motorcycle batteries, which are of much lower quality as reflected in the warranty.

I think where the Never-Start comes from if the fact that most wally world shoppers buy the cheapest batt and toss it in their car plus they had a lot of bad batts that were new. In any case they had a crap load of returns and warranties on the batteries.

Johnson Control or any other battery maker will build a battery to meet your price point for resale so just cause they make em don't mean it's top of the line. And I don't trust wally world to provide anything of quality. As long as thier name isn't on it they don't care!

I stay away from wally world batts for the simple reason that I can pay a little more at Napa or for an Interstate 6 miles from home or drive 25 miles to get a wally world. Seeing as how I normally needed a battery on a demand basis (like now) I can't plan buying one into a shopping trip.

Prices have gone up with all lead-acid batteries. I can't figure who so many are eager to trash Walmart, yet praise places like NAPA and Interstate. I've had the most failures with NAPA batteries when they were made by Exide. NAPA finally got smart and changed to East Penn/Deka. Interstate also are made by Johnson Controls.

And yeah sure - batteries are custom tailored for places that sell them so even though one company makes them - they still vary by brand name. Sometimes just by warranty offered. That being said, a good company tends to have good quality control across the board (unlike Exide).

Walmart auto/truck batteries are made my Johnson Controls. Some marine are made by Exide. I've had zero failures in 10 years with those made by Johnson Controls and I've got over 20 Walmart Everstarts in various diesel trucks and tractors. The same company that makes them for Walmart also makes them for the following:

Acura, Advance Auto Parts, Autocraft, Motorcraft, Subaru, Interstate, Western Auto, Tough One, Alliance, American Hardware, Ames, Varta, Blains Farm & Fleet, Battery Alliance, Bosch, Carrefour(Europe), Champion, Delphi, Walmart Everstart, Sears Diehard, Kirkland, Autozone Duralast, Prostart, Optima, Amara Raja Batteries LTD(Joint venture with Johnson Controls India).
Varta, Optima Batteries, LTH, and Heliar are all battery manufactures owned by Johnson Controls.
Johnson Controls supplies Ford Motor company, Diamler Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Isuzu with original equipment batteries.

I quit buying batteries from Wally World when they quit having a Champion branded L/G battery. The ONLY thing I use now is Auto-Zone. One of the Captains of our Fire Department is also a mechanic for the local hospital working on ambulances. They at one time used batteries from a major nationwide auto parts store that started and is based locally. They were always having battery problems WHICH IS NOT GOOD in ambulances. They switch to Auto-Zone batteries. Their battery problem disappeared. The last Auto-Zone battery I replaced was 10 years old. Auto-Zone batteries cost NO MORE than other brands.

I brought a new batt. 3 years ago for my Goldwing at Sam's Club. A year later the alternator went bad. I first thought it was the batt. I took it back to Sams and they said it was ok but I told them I want it replaced. It took a talk to the manger but ended up with a new battery at no charge. I have had good luck at Sam's which I always considered it the same as walmart since they own it. I have a farm bussiness account at sams and avoid the sales tax so I go there instead of walmart.

worst batterries i ever bouht are the skinyazjonDEERE batterrries ,, gottta buy a new set everydamyr ..The are always corroding and are plagued with bad connections ,, I put a shiny copper penny on each battery ,, that helps a bunch for corrossion ,,, i amm gonna convert to real batterries and han those skinnnt j-dere boxes on a nail

I can think of a number of reasons to trash Wal Mart and praise NAPA. First being is that Wal Mart carries a lot of cheap stuff that doesn't last from power tools to clothing. NAPA has provided me quality parts that they warrenty with no problems for years. While working as a mechanic I had issues with parts from Checker, Advanced and Auto Zone. Sure I've had a few issues with NAPA too but they have always taken care of me right now. Different stores can make a difference too. The NAPA I go to is great while one about 8 miles the other direction is a joke. Small town, about 500 people, and they close for lunch and will not pick up the phone sometimes for hours. Another NAPA that is 25 miles is open on Sundays and I've only had one problem with them in 15 years that the manager fixed right away because it was a smart Alec kid/employee error.

Besides I like keeping the small guys in the area in business. Would hate to have to go 25 miles every time I needed something. Did that this spring chasing down bearings for my baler, drove over 100 miles to 3 dealers and a day and a half that I should have been baling.

I think the last Motorcraft battery I bought was a Bosch, or at least that was what was originally my F-150. I replaced it with another Bosch from Pep Boys. Truck is a 1999 on its 2nd battery

I bought a 3yr warranty battery from Wal-Mart for my pickup which used to stay parked 11 month out of the year. Two years after I bought the battery, pickup wouldn"t start in the winter after setting for months and found I one cell frozen. Took the battery back to Wal-Mart, no receipt, and they replaced with new battery and gave me another 3 yrs warranty free of charge. How can you beat a deal like that? I have two years on the current battery.

I know group 78 specificlly the DT batteries have gone way up in the last year or so..

4ys ago, the bat for my wifes yukon was like 37$ for the 'CHEAP' yellow one at walmart. it's near 80$ now...

Bad thing is there is only 3 or 4 companies that make batteries so any given company has to buy from those places and yep now days you get lucky some times and get a good battery other times you get a bad one. I have seen a battery be bad before you even had the chance to install it and other last well past what they should have. So yep now days it is a simple crap shoot as to any thing being good or bad or some where between. The M35 Military 6X6 I drove in a couple months back has batteries in it that date back to 2000 and they are about to give up the ghost and I have to keep a charger on them to keep them up

Johnson controls left my little city, Rockwood, Mich. and took probably 100 jobs with them. Don't know where they went. Very bad for the community. Dave

I buy wal mart simply because they are closest generally to where i am at when one fails.Just my opinion but to me they are all excellent in that case! actually the best and longest lasting battery i ever had was one of those sears diehards. You could just pick it up and see it weighed about twice as much as any other. If it werent so far off my beaten path to go to sears thats what i would buy.

NAPA is a "small guy." I don't think so. A good friend of mine owns the local NAPA store in my town. Yes, she is a "small guy" but the NAPA franchise is not.

Plenty of "small guys" working at Walmart also.

Comparing NAPA to Walmart is "apples to oranges" anyway. But with auto-parts stores - I get much better service and prices from Rock Auto that I dod from any NAPA I've ever dealt with. Same parts, same or better warranties and much better prices ALL the time.

Small guy as in a local business. Local NAPA is owned and operated by a good guy and his wife. Closest Wal Mart is owned by Wal Mart. Closest NAPA 6 miles, closest other parts store other than a poor excuse NAPA is 25 and Wal Mart is 25. Closest town over 15K population 90 miles. I'm right between 2 towns, less than 3 miles from each.....big ones, less than 100 each.

Price of lead has gone up dramatically which drive lead acid battery prices or at least is an excuse. Whatever Kubota puts in their tractors is what I want, its a Japanese brand, I've got one 9 years old and she starts in -30 C just like nothing.

I was on a trip with my 98 Dodge GrandCarvaan a few months ago. In a very remote area. Charge-light came on and got me nervous. We were 200 miles from home and had no tools. I was worried that the battery would go dead before I got to civilization somewhere. With electronic fuel injection, ignition. ECM. electric trans shifing, etc. - I suspect modern autos can't get to far with no charging system.

After driving 40 miles we found a NAPA store in Speculator, NY (Adirondacks). I tried to buy an alternator - no good. They could get me a "rebuilt" the next day for $140. So, I bought a spare battery to take with me. This NAPA store sells Interstate batteries. They sold me a Interstate Megatron MT-34 outright (no exchange) for $148. $10 just for core-credit. WHAT a rip off !

Let me compare figures here . .

The battery that was in my van is a Walmart Everstart Maxx 34N. 5 years old, still fine, and now costs $89 (add $5 for no-exchange). That's a lot cheaper then $148 and the Walmart battery has better warranty.

Interstate MT-34 at NAPA - cost $148 outright and has 2 year replacement warranty and 75 month pro-rated.

Walmart Everstart Maxx 34N - $94 outright and has 3 year replacement warranty and 108 month pro-rated warranty.

NAPA Legend 7534N costs $108 at my local NAPA with NO full replacement warranty - just 75 month pro-rated.

By the way, the "rebuilt" alternator NAPA offered to get me was $148 with exchange and $200 outright sale. I didn't buy it. When I got home I bought a new (not rebuilt) OEM alternator from Rock Auto for $105.

After all that, I never put in the $148 battery or my new alternator - yet. Charge light went back off and van is charging fine. I have no idea what caused the light to come on during that trip. That new Interstate battery is now in my IH diesel tractor. I'll stick the new alternator in the van before we take any more long trips.

The batter in my Kubota lasted 11 years. Could not replace it at the dealer for a similar one. They tried to sell me a Decka for $145 and the terminals were not even in the right place. Went to Walmart and got the closest one that would fit.

My father-in-law just had his battery finally go dead in his Ford-Shibaura 4WD tractor. 11 years old and that battery would still hold a charge for a few days. He just got sick of jumping it after sitting for a week. That battery is some OEM Japanese brand. Whatever it is, it was a good one.

I too have had poor luck with NAPA batteries in the past and have not bought batteries from NAPA for 15 years or so.

I just go to a local salvage yard and buy batteries for $20.00. Haven't bought a new battery in years..

I have recently bought two Wal Mart batteries. One replaced a five year old Wal Mart and the other replaced a eight year old Wal Mart battery. I have never had any problem with Wal Mart batteries not outliving their warranyt. These last two purchases, I checked both Advance Auto and Car Quest prices and they were both considerably higher than Wal Mart. One of the other posters mentioned that Wal Mart no longer has Champion batteries. I did not buy a Champion, but, our Wal Mart had Champion's in several sizes. The group 65 I bought was about $89 and the group 65 Champion at Wal Mart with the same cca rating was about $120.
