What are those switches called that shut off the pump if the pressure drops below a certain point? I looked in Graingers and they have about 600 switches but I didn't see one. Our sons well has pumped out a couple of times recently and he should have one .
Thanks, Russ

I think its a low pressure cutoff switch. I usually get mine from Lowes or the hardware store. I use one due to my well only produces about 1 1/2 gallons per minute. it works. try this one: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/DAYTON-Pressure-Switch-2YCF1?Pid=search

Ive had well water for over 40 years, I call them "water pump pressure switches", cant tell you what Graingers calls them?? But looks like "pressure switch" or "water pressure switch" has to be the starting search criteria. Around here any Tractor Supply or Rural King or Central Tractor etc etc or Ace Hardware or Sears has them readily available on the shelves... Seems like mine were Square D brand???

NOTE The cheaper ones DO NOT HAVE THE SAFETY AUTOMATIC LOW PRESSURE SHUT OFF feature DO NOT BUY ONE WITHOUT IT...What they do is shut down if the pump looses prime or you run out of water etc so the pump dont run dry and burn up. They have a little lever on the side you have to turn and hold to manually override the low pressure shut down feature until the pump primes and builds up pressure above the shut down setting.

If you have the cheaper one that doesnt have the auto low pressure safety shut down feature and the pump looses prime, it keeps running dry AND THATS A NO NO that cost bucks to fix

Mine has clogged up due to lime in its little 1/8 inch or tubing inlet so keep that orfice clean

Next summer Im giving up after 40 years of wells and hooking to rural water woooooo hooooo

Russ, What you are talking about is what I
call a "Well Tender Switch". A standard pressure control switch will turn, ie....on @ 40lbs ; off @ 65lbs. A well tender will shut the entire pump OFF it pressure drops say to 25lbs to prevent the
Burn Up of the pump. Call your local water well people ask them for the name brand they recommend! Hope this helps.

Called many things but a "water pump pressure switch" will get in the correct catgegory.

There are several types. Light duty, heavy duty, shallow well piston pump (low pressure 20-40 PSI), high pressure for jet pump or submergedc pump (40-60 PSI), and also many available with a low-pressure automatic shut-off.

Common hi-pressure control for $15 is Square D 07217 2-Pole #Switch 40-60#OPEN-HI

I bet you have a large supply tank.

That is about the lowest if not the lowest producing well that I have heard of.

My well is around 12 gallon a minute and I thought that was low.

Around here if you get a well in shale, that's not uncommon. Not much volume, but you can pump it forever and never run dry. Just put in a bigger storage tank.
