One of my best friends, who I work with, was telling me about a place he used to visit many years ago. It was in Maine ,and it belonged to his wifes grandfather, He was reminising how nice it was there,so I said to him I know there is some people from Maine on the tractor site,I will see if they are near there, He said go for it,so here goes, The place was Clearwater lake, near Farmington Maine and the grandfather had a hunting lodge there, which he gave to my friends sister in law who in turn sold it.

Long ride from my place, but I've been in the area. It's on the western border with NH, and I'm about as far east as you can get in Maine without a passport.

Les from Cow Hampshah is actually closer to it than I am.

Does your friend speak French? It is nice up there. I use to hang in norridgewock, with my brother. I know Sabago Lake, but not Clearwater. When last I was there in the late 1980's it was inhabited by normal earthy folks. Word is that today it is filled with freaky abundant nutty people with lots of dollars, and no so much sense.

i like boothbay harbor. my girlfriend (now my wife) worked one summer at a resort in boothbay to earn college money. i made 4 trips there that summer to see her.

I live in Farmington.Clearwater is pretty lake.the water is clear and cold, mostly spring fed. It"s about 751 acres, depth 129 feet at the deepest point.IT has many species of fish-salmon,lake trout, brook trout, many others.
There are a lot camps all around, some are seasonal camps and some are year round residents.A nice quiet area with mountains all around.
hope this helps Al

Here is a picture of Katahdin. Can see it from the back yard.

Eh, we've got all walks of life here in Maine. Plenty of back woods type, plenty of yuppies and everything in between.

Oh and if you really want the french speaking folks your shooting way to far south, Aroostook County is where you will find our French population, well minus the greater Lewiston area. :p

My Grandmother, Mother, Sister and Wife went to college in Farmington, I've seen the lake but I've never been on it.

"flatlander"?

Is that what people called the "Sea Coast Area", when I was growing up in New Hampshire? I drilled in Portland for a year between the Navy and Coast Guard. I'm guessing that Fawteen is a French name?

A flatlander is someone "from away". Folks from Maine think the rest of the country is flat as a pancake, hence the name.

Yeah...I know.

While I was in the reserves, I lived in Rochester, NH and the guys from northern Maine would call us "Flatties", even though the guys from Ossippe had as much hills as any of them. Don't get me wrong. I got along fine with them. Oh yeah, we had Frogs as far south as Derry and Plastow. Are we allowed to say, "Frog"? We had French speaking Canadians as far south as Derry and Plastow. You know the green looking building on the UNH Durham campus? I did the drywall on a crew where I was the only one who spoke English.

i spent a year and half in limestone (aroostook county me ) 66-67 while in the air force .potato country. very rual , good people . from about houlton on up it reminded me of old west pictures .

If we get past the smack talk of mine, my point is that while Maine was a great place when I was young, it has changed. If your time there was in the late 1960's, a lot has changed.

I never realized all the fun in life I had missed until I lived in Danforth, Maine 40 years ago. Anybody been there lately?

I am in the Bangor area currently. Most eastern international airport in the states. As a result of the troop flights stop in Bangor. there is a group of very dedicated individuals who make sure every flight is greeted with a Hero's welcome regardless of the time of day. "
Since we began greeting flights in May of 2003, the Maine Troop Greeters have greeted over 6200 flights with more than 1,280,000 service members and 313+ military dogs. And it is our pledge that as long as there are U.S. armed forces serving overseas we will be here to greet them. " More about them below. All I know about the lake is you can't get there from here

Limestone is a bit of a ghost town now that Loring AFB has closed, other then that and the effect it had on the surrounding towns I really don't think a whole lot has changed up there over the years. Still miles and miles of potato fields, and plenty of timber harvesting.

My wife grew up in Caribou, I really love it up there. She isn't quite as fond as me but that's OK.
