Oil Pressure problem 360 Dodge

Oil pressure started dropping from 50 PSI to 0.
It would drop then go back up and then drop to 0. Now my check gauges lite is on and it shows no oil pressure. Any ideas? Clean oil and new Fram filter about 1000 miels ago.

(quoted from post at 09:15:55 12/12/11) have you verified the dash gauge with a known good hand-held gauge?

When the pressure dropped I drove it another mile to work and parked it.
I went out and started it and still no oil pressure at all. It didn't make any engine noises like it was starved for oil.

Screw in a good mechanical gauge and check the pressure.
The Fram filter didn't blow a seam and dump all the oil did it?

You need to check that with a hand held gauge. If you drove it a mile, parked it and then restarted it it should a least be making a fair amount of lifter noise (them are hydraulic and need engine oil pressure to work right) in not a rod or 2 knocking. Could be a the dash light or the oil pressure sending unit.

It would help if you told us the year and aplication too. Many vehicles after a certain year will not run without at least 5PSI, 2nd sending unit shut off the ignition or fuel pump.

As some have stated---check with mechanical gauge. A few years ago, I had a FRAM oil filter failure! The first thing I would do is to change the oil filter and hope it didn't cause the problem.
Just google "[b:640755706a]Problems with Fram oil filters[/b:640755706a]" and you may be surprised!

I'd sure try another sending unit.

If it didn't have oil pressure, that thing would really be rattlin' by now.

It is a 2001 Ram 1500 4 x4. It does have a Fram filter on it.

About 45 years ago that happened to my co-worker's 1962 Ford car with the 352cid engine. The engine lite came and and the lifters started to rattle. We pushed the car into the garage and installed a pressure gauge. No pressure and my co-worker told me to put him on leave the next day. He called the next morning at work and told me to pick up a new pump and I did that and went over to help him. The sludge caused the pump to bypass the oil. He cleaned the old pump and probably would've been ok, but he never used it. You may have a bad sending unit. Hal

try a new oil filter first, they have a bypass built in, i had one give be about 5 LBS pressure once, changed filter and i was back in business

I think the check engine light and gauge are going to be using 2 different sensors. I would follow the other's advice and put a mechanical gauge on it. Be careful, too your probably nearing the point of spinning a bearing if it in fact has no oil pressure.

Okay--------I just changed the filter. Started it up and had no pressure, but then it went up. Oil in it ahs about 1000 miles onit, but it seems thick.
Fram filter feels heavy.

I wonder: Does Chrysler use Stepper Motors to power Dash Guages as GM does? We have concerns from time to time with the Dash Guages malfunctioning and the cause is Stepper Motor failure. Another pain in the neck from GM on our '06 Impala Chevrolet. Repair Costs most times around $75.00 and time to remove the cluster and shipping to Georgia for repair.Right now the Tach guage is not operable at all.Gas Guage flutuates from time to time also. I've never had Dash Guage failures on any car we have had until this car.

Check oil pressure with a guage as stated, but leave it on until it gets to operating temp. When you lose oil pressure is almost as important as how much pressure you lose. Raise the RPM occasionally to see if it drops. Post bac the results. Hope this helps. Gerard

The oil pressure sending switches are failure prone on these engines, as is the oil pump pickup screen plugging. As others have said, you should have heard something by now if there is no oil pressure.

Checking with a mechanical gauge is the first step
