John Deere 4630

5000 hours, cab, heat and air, straight drive transmission, new front tires, 90% rear, Front grill slightly damaged, weights, and dual wheels. Do yall think that for $9500 it is a good deal?

In my part of the country that would be a steal if its anything decent.Id look it over real good but those 30s are good tractors. Gota watch the rearends in them tho they are a little weak if i remember correctly

if you want a fuel drinking, hard starting, overheating tractor than a 4630 is the tractor for you! Stock up on either, you'll need it.

Sure seems nice if rest of tractor looks as nice as the hour meter as far as low hours. Remember they are 1000 rpm pto shaft only. Thats cheap power there.

Neighbor runs one, never seems to have any problems with it. It is his "big" tractor, has spent many hours on a disc with no rear end issues that I have heard of, and I know for a fact he does not have to ether it.

well we"ve had one since the early 80s. right now i"ve got it torn down for an engine rebuild. #2 piston decided it wanted to be two. almost 6000 hours. synchro shift.

it"s a good tractor for tillage. below about 1400 rpm it"s gutless, but let that blower spool up and she"ll pull. shifting takes a strong shoulder and arm and learning the sweet spot. not the greatest design. as for your price, tough to say without looking at it, but that"s in the ballpark.

they become fuel eatin overheating when some dam fool turns them up to much .never go over 10 % for a working tractor

ruff riding but then that's a 30 series trait.
i'll second the hard starting. burns the same fuel whether pulling or not and if you turn them up; the heat gauge has to be watched. If you have the right kind of work for it; it'll do the job.

The pump can be changed so they have adequate low end torque. They did come with just a two pinion ring gear. Most have been changed. The 1000 rpm only pto is the reason they are cheap. If you can deal with the pto, the price seems right. A 4430 will cost you at least 3000 more, and will not do as much work. You do get a 540 pto though. 30 40 50 55 60 series JD ride as good as any other tractor. Vic

Look to see if the engine has been apart. Overhauled my cousins 2 4630's and both of them decided they wanted the rings on top of the piston instead of the side. He bought both of them used a few years apart. Can't remember the hours but the second one the pan was never off.

We have one that we use on the manure pump, blower for corn, and on the 2nd discbine. Everyone else complains about the thing, because its not new, I kind of am fond of it. It used to be the main tractor for such things like cutting and chiseling, so I have had a chance to get to know it. Its got a reman in it and has almost 16,000 hours on it (5,000 on the new motor), kicking 190 hp. Its a sturdy tractor and cheap horsepower for $9500 especially with that green paint. We did have some electrical issues with it though.

Watched a sharp 4630 quad range cab and air sell for $10,000 on a sale sat in IA. 4430 powershift, cab fair sold for $15,000. Sharp 4230 quad cab air with lots of blowby $9700.4000 fender tractor good $8900.Early 4020 powershift fair $7000.

The neighbors I work with have two of them, one is powershift and the other is quadrange. They bought both of them new and almost immediately turned them up to 200 HP. Now they both have 15000 very hard hours and they're still running good. They look like he!! and they seep and leak but they still start and run like a top. I haven't driven them much but when I did the first thing I noticed was the lack of bottom end torque. Never was around them much in cold weather so I can't say much about the cold weather starting. Jim

I sold my 4430 two years ago for $12,500. Original engine, PS transmission, early rear end- 11,007 hours. Rated 125, dynoed 137. 1000# front weights, duals, new cab interior, front tank, 90% rears, new fronts. That"s a good price on a 4630 that has fewer than half the hours.

Cheap draw bar horse power. The reason the JD 4430 will out sell them is the 1000 only PTO. It just kills them on resale. Most people don't have too many 1000 PTO implements.

If it has ever been overhauled it will start better with the higher compression pistons.

5000hrs.is very low for a tractor of that age.Make sure by looking at wear points,blow-by,and general condition. They werent great starters but were good tractors in their day.$9500 or less with duals is fair you just dont want to buy any problems so the best way I have found and it usually costs less than $100 is have it inspected by a good JD dealership. They will find things you never thought to replace as they are trying to sell parts and labor

Buying from original owner. Don't need it but thought it was a good deal. Got about 150 acres of wheat to plant and figured it would be faster than my 1085. My neighbor is begging to buy it if I decline.
