I have to chuckle every time I drive past this interchange on the Interstate, as I did yesterday.

I-80 through Nebraska is the main east/west artery for drug traffic between the west coast and the east coast. Drugs go east, money from their sale goes west.

In the middle of a 20 mile stretch between Grand Island and Aurora, Nebraska there's an interchange on I-80 that really doesn't do much. To the south is a gravel road and to the north is blacktop to a small town a few miles away. So periodically the Nebraska State Patrol puts a temporary sign "State Patrol Drug Check 1 Mile. Be Prepared To Stop" on the shoulder of the eastbound lane a half mile from the interchange.

They then don't bother the traffic on the Interstate, they just field whoever bails out at the interchange. Works quite well, from what our County Sheriff tells me.

I've seen them do that on I-70. In Indiana, the first exit east bound from Ill is the Darwin road. Keeps the cops busy searching out of state cars. You would think the ACLU would complain.

Putting that IQ test on Darwin Road is good for bonus points, but I don't think stupidity is a recognized constitutional right. That kind of leaves the ACLU out of it.

I feel sorry for the Public Defender's Office that has to work with them. This has the feel of a Bob Newhart skit.

"...so how did you get arrested?"
"Well...there was this sign, see...on the highway."
"...and the sign arrested you?"
"...no, but I was driving a van full of stuff...and the sign said there was a drug stop a mile ahead..."
"...so you stopped to get some drugs?"
"No, man....the van was already full of drugs. I stopped before the sign said there was a drug stop! Do you think I'm stupid?"
"Let's not go there. So you took that exit because there was a drug stop on the highway ahead...right?"
"Yeah, but then there was a drug stop at the exit."
"So - you stopped at the wrong drug stop?"
"I don't know...they took my van and all my drugs and brought me here to jail."

They do that on I-95 in lower S.C.and it is quite a long way around. They don,t really pull a lot of cars. They Photograph and maintain surveillance for some time after. Then they know who to pull later when they see them again. Catch a lot of networks this way.
