What are the pros and cons on these two backhoes. Were they reliable? What are the differences between the two?

Totally different machines.

500 is an industrial version of the 3020 farm tractor. Waterloo design. Not great when it comes to finding parts and can be very expensive to fix - especially if a PowerShift.

If you want a big Deere backhoe, you're better off with a 410 or 510 that share almost nothing with the 500.

310 is built upon the the Deere 1020 farm tractor platform. Dubuque design. Lighter and smaller then the 500 but with much better parts availability along with a trans and engine that are still current.

A lot of parts for the older hoes are getting sketchy through Deere's mainline parts.... A&I can probably largely fill that gap but I'm sure there's still some things that go through the cracks.
I was looking for a clutch for a 410 this spring and it was NLA through industrial dealer parts... but AG dealers have enough sense to look at A&I and found the stuff for me.
I'd try to look for a bit newer if I could...

It's possible the Ind dealer didn't look for current part # as the part # has been substituted. A dry type traction clutch plate is available from JD today.
Part Number: AL71088
Replaces Part: RE33891
Part Price: 412.00 USD
Description: CLUTCH DISC

But here's the clutch plate from A&I
Part Number: A-AL71088
Part Price: 192.96 USD
Description: CLUTCH DISK

No, he checked the sub numbers.... so did the ag dealer. This one just isn't available. IIRC, there were a couple of different ones depending on serial number, etc.... and this booger was NLA.
Turned out the clutch wasn't bad anyhow; just a problem in the wet clutch valve linkage once I got to looking at it closely.
Actually... just remembered... I should correct what I said... the disc WAS available. The PP was not.
Regardless... my original point is that one needs to start being carefull with a lot of these older machines of 70's-80's vintage. A good many of them were never built in numbers that make aftermarket parts support very lucrative for anyone and the OEM's don't want to support something with low turnover either...
I'm not just picking on Deere either. They're all doing this.

I agree parts are getting harder to get for all brands(colors) and more expensive($$$$$$$$)!!!!!!!!!!!!

You stating that it was actually the PP not the clutch plate changed the availability from JD(The part AT60368 pressure plate is no longer available. Contact your local John Deere dealer for other options.)

Yes, the PP was NLA. The 'other option' that the dealer had was to change the transmission....
I'm NOT kidding. This was at the construction dealer. I laughed, walked away and went home and called the ag dealer.
They could actually get the stuff through A&I that would have been needed...
