1500, 1/2 ton, 360 gas engine, 3 speed with overdrive automatic transmission, 133,000 miles. just got this truck about a month ago, trany fluid was brunt looking and smelled brunt. change fluid and installed new filter 600 miles ago, last Fri with 6 adults in it, the transmission would not shift into drive unless I ran the rpm up to around 3000, then left my foot off the accelerator pedal quickly. would not shift into overdrive at all. Also overdrive off light came on, Drove it this morning when everything was cold, shifted fine into 1st 2nd, 3rd, and overdrive, but transmission shuddered when truck road speed was at 5 mph. fluid is brunt looking, and smells brunt again. Transmission does NOT slip. Any ideas?

I'd say get it to a tranmission guy you trust. It may be trashed or it might be salvagable, don't know until someone who knows that transmission can test & diagnois. Gut feeling tells me this is why the previous owner parted company with it and it's probably toasted. The hope is because it's not slipping it may be a control issue some of the newer units use soloenoids and computers to control shifting, some of those can be reapired without taking the trans out of the unit, I had a few Dodge vans that had a similar slipping/shifting/leaking problem that was fixable.

Drop the fluid again, change the filter again and adjust the bands while the pan is down, one band in pan the other on lf corner of trans. You can Google the band adjustment proceedure.
The trans has an overheat sensor in it that keeps the trans from going into overdrive if the fluid temp is too high. Full load of passengers and possibly loose bands could cause the overheat.
Use ATF+4 fluid, it has a better additive blend and takes the heat better.
If this doesn't wake it up, it's time for a trip to the tranny shop

Hey Rusted
You are going to have to bite the bullet and find another xmission. My son had the same problem, found a Chrysler certified rebuilt one at a junk yard and 240k miles later it is still going strong.

Before buying another transmission, may I recommend changing the fluid & filter as well as verifing the bands are correctly set. If you are slipping, you will tend to burn your fluid. In my opinion, the two most frequent misdiagnosis in automobles are blaming a tune up engine issue as a transmission issue and second is replacing/ rebuilding an automatic transmission when adjustments are all that are needed. I suppose O2 sensors get a lot of bad troubleshooting, but adjusting your bands is cheap enough to check before throwing out your transmission. Dodges from the early 1990's till now aren't great in any system, but, I would still check band adjustments before replacing transmission.

The trans is controlled by the powertrain module located on the passenger side firewall. The first thing you need to do is to pull codes. Output speed sensors have a high failure rate on this trans. Do not change the trans without proper diagnosis.
