I would appreciate opinions on the value of a 1954 Ford 640. It isn"t very nice to look at, paint spotted with rust, but not deep pitting or holes, a few dings and dents as well. It seems to run well and sounds good to my inexperianced ears. I drove it breifly and it seemed to have plenty of power. It has a loader and that worked quickly, in other words it didn"t seem sluggish or strained. The PTO worked, clutch, breaks and stearing ( not easy to turn ) all seem OK. I Didn"t see and signs of oil leaks or any unusual smoke or noises from anything. The tires are quite weathered however and that is my greatest concern.

The owner said he had it for a year, but it"s just too big for his small yard - true. He claims he can"t go less than $2700, down from his asking price of $3800.

What do you think, is that a reasonable price?

Thanks

Location will make a difference most of the time. Here a running 600 series is 2K or more without a loader regardless of overall condition. Local guy right now is asking 2400 for a Ford 8n with the wrong fenders, bad tires in need of serious degreasing and paint with a beat to heck trip loader on it.

I could see $3800 if it was perfect, diesel, and was a 660 or 661 instead of a 640.

I often see 640s or 641s for $1500-$2000 without loaders. Too fast in 1st and reverse for many types of work. Non-live PTO isn't very handy either. A Case VAC for $700 can do pretty much the same work as a 640 and often sells much cheaper.

If you're in the northern Michigan area, I've got a pretty nice 1963 Ford 641 with loader I'm going to get rid of. I bought it "over the phone" a few years ago as a 661. If I'd known it was actually a 641, I'd never had paid for it.

From how you have described the tractor and loader I think that is a decent price. Three years ago I paid $2600 for a 1955 Ford 740 with a blade and good chains. It was in basically the same condition that you have described, although it had new rear tires. It was only after plenty haggling that I got him to agree to $2600. I'm happy.

Well to start with there is no such thing as a 1954 640 since they where not made till 1955, yes production started in later 54 but they where sold as the new 1955 year model tractors sort of like you can buy a 2012 car right now in 2011 but it is not a 2011 car but a 2012 car. That said all in all if it runs good and the tires are pretty good, to replace the rear tires your looking at close to a grand. $2700 is not a bad price but not a real steal either
