anti theft wheel lock ?

Been thinking of adding a wheel lock to trailer to slow down thieves. Short of removing the wheels, is there something out there to clamp to the wheels that would stop thieves? It wouldn't take long for bolt cutters or cordless grinder to cut a padlock or chain. Please list the item you use and where you got them. Thanks George

You can get boxes here that slide over the coupling and can be locked. Also a ball that you stick in the coupling and turn a key to expand/lock it in place....

If this would work for you and you don't have them available, I could send you something.

Dave,
Already have coupler locked down with a gorilla guard inside the ball and a master lock on the latch.

A wrecker could hock on to the hitch and there goes my trailer.

Looking for a wheel lock.

I always wondered why people didn't just lock the jack down? But then I have never had mine stolen yet so what do I know? I did have my pickup ransacked while I was in WI. They threw my checkbook on the floor. I guess they were looking for cash or drugs. At least the window was down so they didn't have to break in.

Had a 72 F-150 one time. Someone broke into it and stole my dirty laundry bag. Thing that made me mad was the door was unlocked, but they broke in through the vent window.

If it has brakes on, is there anyway you can 'lock' them on manualy. That way they can't take it unless is lifted onto another trailer....

What are you going to use to lock the jack down with that bolt cutters can't cut?

That was the point of my post. I can cut a lock with a cordless grinder in less than 30 seconds.

Still looking for recommendations on wheel locks. So far, no one has even mentioned one.

George in my thinking a lock will keep a honest person honest. If some one is going to steal your trailer there is not much that you can do to stop them if they really want it that bad. JMO

If the thieves are coming equipped with bolt cutters and angle grinders they are serious and you are not going to stop them. An old plank burried just below the surface with big spikes in might slow them down.

Bite the bullet and take the wheels off, let trailer almost down to the ground. If you are really serious, take the hubs off too, wrap spindles in plastic to keep rain off, leave spindle well greased.

I did a Google search for "wheel boot lock", got a lot of results.

If you're making your own, what about a piece of square tube mounted under the trailer that can be extended out through rim holes when parked? Maybe operated with a small motor and screw shaft that extends/retracts it? Would have to keep sliding section greased. Hidden switch, or switch mounted in your tow vehicle. Could draw power either from trailer battery(if equipped) or trailer plug.

I like the idea of putting a GPS unit on trailer. Then if it's stolen, it can be recovered, charges pressed and hopefully perps will be locked up. At least that would keep them out of circulation temporarily.

Good luck,

Anthony

That is a lot of work, expecially if you plan to use the trailer a few times a week. My original post stated I didn't want to take the wheels off.

If you are that concerned about it being stolen move it to a secure location. You already have a ball lock what more can you do? A dedicated theif is gonna get your trailer no matter what. Chain the rims together, go home and get a good nites sleep.

Some trailers I've been around ahve that safetey cable that you put around your ball before lowering the jack down. If it gets pulled out it locks up the brakes. Probably something easy for a guy to bypass if he knows what to look for, but it could probably be hidden too.

don't be so cranky..it's not becoming

I put a link to a wheel clamp in my second post.... If it's the wrong idea, sorry..... try google....

Sorry Dave, need to work on my people skills. It seems that no one has one to share with me the best one.

like the others said, you're not gonna stop a thief if they want it.... I'd just get a set of stamps and stamp your name and last 4 of your social (?)
in an inconspicious place under the trailer, take good pics of it and have on hand in the worst case, and maybe run a cable thru the wheels andover the axel for discouragement and let it go......

good luck.

I had this issue a few years ago - posted the same question.

Got the same answers.. Took a wheel off. After lying in the mud to replace it, I decided $40 a year for insurance was my best solution.

That is the emergency breakaway switch. The brakes will only stay locked as long as the battery holds out. Once the battery goes dead, no more brakes.

There is no way to lock electric trailer brakes without electricity, and if you leave them locked with a charger on the battery, the magnets will burn out after a few hours.

Frankly, there are no suggestions because there are no solutions.

Your coupler lock will deter most thieves. Adding a chain and padlock will scare off all but the most determined thief.

If they want your trailer so bad that they bring a wrecker, bolt cutters, and a cordless grinder, LET THEM HAVE IT. Just make sure your insurance is paid up.
