Hey folks,
I can't seem to get bits that will last very long without busting ... (phillips or torx lasts about the same amount of time which is about as long as it takes to get a real good start into a job....... Anything in particular I should be looking for? The bits I've been breaking lasted real good when used with a drill....

Thanks, Dave

They make bits for the impact driver. I use the dewalts. The
standard bits break for me too.

I use the Dewalt impact ready bits. I'm still on my first one after a couple thousand 3" screws. Tip is a -bit- twisted but very little. Impact is a 14.4 Makita Li-ion.

I bought the store brand a Menards, about half the price of DeWalt and are lasting fine, till you start driving 3.5in screws!

You been a BITS off your self - Can't help you with the IMPACT from ze wife!
Oh yeah, the DRIVER is in the new shed.

Yer phriend,

You are finding out why there are impact driver bits just like impact sockets. These newer impact drivers are getting real powerful. The regular bits are not made to take the sudden force an impact driver puts on them. They are designed for straight torque. You should not use regular bits in an impact driver. They can shatter and cause bodily harm, not joking.

My oldest son got an impact driver for a gift two years ago. He just used his regular Dewalt bits. He was using the torx bit to drive four inch screws into seasoned pine lumber. It shattered. A big piece of it went into his left hand. It cut a ligament to his middle finger. He had to have several surgeries on his hand. It still gives him problems.

I made all of my kids get the correct bits for the correct tool. We got together and ordered them from Granger's. We spray paint the impact bits red. That way we know if we have the right ones in the impact drivers.

I buy 6 inch long torques bits from menards. Never damage the tip. If I'm not careful, I'll snap them off where they connect to the 1/4 inch six sided part. I don't think there is a 1/4 inch animal that can stand up to over 100 ft-lb of torque. Most of the time, I'll twist off a screw or a lag. I have twisted off 3 long bits. The shorter ones seem to last longer. I've even snapped off the nut drivers. The way I see it, bits are cheap and it's just part of having an impact driver. Impacts are still better than using a drill to set screws. The tips of the bits in an impact last longer than if they were in a drill.
