Antique Tank Heater

Anybody ever see one of these? It's cast iron. Has a little grate in the bottom and an ash pan that lifts out. I can't wait to build a fire in it! I tied it with wire to the side so the horse won't tip it over. I'm sure I'll have to do something different once I bring the cows home but with more head drinking I won't need it.

Put a length or 2 of stove pipe in that round hole. The square one is the draft, which you can cut down with the tab on the cover. Put a damper in the pipe too. A long slow burn is best.

I figured it would draw better with a joint of pipe. But I know the horse will knock it off any time I don't have fire in it. I'll probably fire it tomorrow as it's supposed to get cold.

Back when we had cows, the heater was in the center of the tank with a wooden cover over it. One end of it had a cover to open so they could drink. That part was inside the fence & the rest outside where the cows couldn't get to the heater. I think we had anchor wires to keep the wind from blowing the pipe crooked. There was another wall built around the outside of the tank which was filled with sawdust for insulation.

We had one of those heaters. Worked very well. Grandpa rigged up a tank of used motor oil to drip through a center hole in the lid to keep a fire going all night. Dad always had a pile of large chunks of fire wood near by also.
