farmall 460 fast hitch repair

I pulled the two point fast hitch out of the bottom of my farmall 460. It damaged the threads in the casing enough that I can't get the three bolts to torque back down. I considered Helicoils as a possible fix, but have heard that they really don't do much. I would like to know if it is possible to drill an additional hole(s) in the casing and steel plate and add a bolt or two, in addition to putting helicoils in the current holes? How about just tapping the old holes out and going with a 7/8 inch diameter bolt instead of the 3/4 inch that are in there now? I am obviously concerned about drilling through the casing and creating a leak, or weak spot. Thanks, Kevin.

Helicoils will hold very well in case iron if installed correctly. I use them all of the time on striped bell housing bolts. One of my Semis has all of the transmission mounting bolts done that way( some one did not tighten the bolts before I bought it). It has held up for three years with no problem.

Where helicoils don't work very well is on spark plugs. It is kind of hit and miss on them.

I used to repair a lot of those by using over sized studs from JD. If they were loose I went to 7/8. I also fabricated 2 pieces of iron on each side that bolted in on the side of the casting and were welded to the bracket. Once I did that , they never came loose again.

I have the same problem with my 460. I had an old IH Service Manager Retired tell me they always used helicolls and they worked very good. He also told me if you have a way to do it lay the tractor on its side to install them.

When you say "went to 7/8" do you mean that you drilled and tapped the holes bigger? Would you consider trying the helicoils?

The choice is yours. I never used them. I have the 7/8 taps in regular and bottoming. I like to use the studs to get as much as possible in the cast , then use a nut to tighten. The extra side brackets really did the job.

teddy 52,
I called John Deere, and the parts man didn't know what I was talking about. You don't happen to have a part number? If not, what were the studs used for by JD? Thanks Again!
