chainsaw carb adjustment

I've got a stihl 026 that seems to get hot when cutting (possibly running lean?) and an old olympic that smokes and has no power. After I tried to adjust the carb on the olympic, I can't get it to start anymore. Anybody good with two stroke carbs? Thanks- Morgan

At full throttle no load, (might want to take the chain off), turn high speed needle in till you hit max RPM, then back out till you hear a "break" in the engine sound. Slightly rich is better than too lean. Then adjust the low speed needle till acceleration feels right. Then adjust idle speed needle so the chain just stops. Do all this with a full tank.

Two things could be wrong with the Olympic. Muffler plugged up or low compression. A good reading would be 190-200 psi. If the compression is down, it will never run right, because much of the compression is being blown out the exhaust. The engine's mixture needs are constantly changing and there's no way the carb can keep up with it. If you can find the parts, and the chrome is still in the cylinder, overhaul it (if the compression is down). Do the easy stuff first, clean the muffler and exhaust port.
