how to know if a turbo is bad

will a bad turbo cause oil consumption and black smoke, no oil in the tube going to the intake manifold, can it also leak on the exhaust side?

If the seals are bad it could pump oil into the exhaust. The engine pumps oil up to the turbo. So it would be under pressure. Bad seal would then let it into the exhaust manifold.

Why do you think it is bad.

Yes it can happen and that is the best way for it to happen. I check the turbo shaft for loose motion or noise at shut down.

tractor is using oil and just come off a rebuild on engine, turbo was not replaced, has plenty of power and starts on the coldest days without help so compression must be good, turbo is awfull black and will blow black smoke, no blow by to speak of out of breather tube

Very easy to check pull the intake hose off the turbo and exhaust and look for signs of oil. Intake should be dry exhaust sooty. If the intake is oily stop running the tractor untill you rebuild turbo as the seals have went south. They will run away buy burning the oil for fuel[ Like the old Detroit Diesels do] .

Bad turbo's will leak from the intake side, the exhaust side, both... or neither one. Pull the intake and exhaust off and look for evidence of a lot of oil and also check the compressor side for slop. If it's getting to the point where the compressor wheel is touching the housing or it has more than 1/8" to 3/16" side play in the bearing you need a new turbo...

turbo seals are not regular seals.. the are like washers that only work when the oil pressure hits thems and they push out and hopefully let the oil go down to the return line.

due the the 1300 degrees, regular seals dont work. so they are a weird animal at best.

make sure the return line is always at the bottom and free and clear of caked up oil so there is absolutely no resistance in the drain. return lines are usually over sized to allow the oil a quick path away from the turbo bearings or otherwise the seals will leak. If someone ran low grade oil, the return lines will have sludge buildup and cause a turbo to start using oil. Most manuals called to replace the return line when ever working on a turbo.
