John Deere 317 lawn tractor

Engine blow by so bad it blows oil fill cap off. I checked compression 105 and 110. I also checked blow by tube on engine seems to be clear. Any advise would be helpful.

Rebuild it,(piston, rings, and valve guides) and it will run anouther 20 years.

Before you rebuild check to make sure that the breather vent is not plugged. Including the breather itself. I am not familiar with that specific engine but more than likely it dumps into the air cleaner. Kohler service manuals are available free online from Kohler in PDF format. Don"t be worried if you see some oil. The compression doesn"t seem too bad.

My LX280 with the 18HP Kawasaki did that at 200 hours, I rebuilt it and it is starting again at 450 Hours.

What motor does it have in it?

I was thinking 317 only had Onan engines.

Mine had the Kohler in it. When it got that bad I purchased the honda 620 kit from Small Engine Warehouse. Easy swap, the honda is a much smoother and fuel effiecent engine than the old Kohler. Plus its fully pressurized and has a spin on filter.

I had an onan 16hp in a 446 Case that was doing what you describe. After I replaced it I was told the problem was probably a bad crank seal. The engine was old but ran strong. I gave the engine to the new owner when I sold the tractor. Have no idea if that was the problem.

Clean out the crankcase ventilation tube so it can flow. Replace the breather cap if the locking tabs are damaged.

317 originally had a Kohler engine. They would run a long, long time IF you never put them on a hillside- they didn't have pressure lube. Any work on roadbanks or other slope would take out the engines pretty quick. There was a kit from Deere to replace the Kohler with an Onan engine that had pressure lubrication. Basically you ended up with a 318.
