rusted feed grinder

There's a grinder mixer coming up at auction that has sat out for awhile. Some of the augers are pretty rusty and I was wondering if this would be a problem in the feed? Would they have to be cleaned up before using?

could you just run some sand or maybe cat litter thru it??

If you could find some corn cobs and grind them .Leave them mix good.Might have to run then in the unload auger a couple of times.

I'm sure a person could and I have thought of this. The question is, is that necessary? Will it bother the cattle?

I'd be more concerned about the bearings. The salts/minerals in feed additives get in the bearings and rusts them if the grinder mixer sits for awhile. The rust on the augers will wear off from the feed running through them. The animals won't know the difference, in fact I used to put iron oxide in the hog feed sometimes to stop tail biting. Jim

Running some corn or whole barley through it will eventually clean it up. I wouldn't worry too much about the rust on the augers either. The bearings and bushings would be a bigger concern to me.

Used to buy and sell quite a few grinder mixers. To shine up a rusty one I found that soybeans worked better than shelled corn to shine them up.

Like the others have posted. I would be more worried about the bearings/gear boxes being locked up. Also look at the bottom of the supplement auger and mixing hopper they rust out if left out very much.

What brand of grinder is it??? The Artsway and International ones with the elbows in the unloading auger that the feed has too go around are real fussy about being rusty. They will plug up if they are rusty.

It seems that good grinder mixers are going up in price. Years ago they where selling cheap.

Come to think of it, wheat shines up a rusty combine auger faster than anything else. You don't have some wheat laying around somewhere do you? Oats are real abrasive too. Rice is the most abrasive. Jim
