Anyone recognize this old winch?

This is an old hand cranked winch I picked up at an auction but never did anything with. It is quite big, has 1/2" cable on it. I'm wondering what it was intended to be used for, if anyone knows. I'm planning to sell it to save space, and if I knew what it was that would probably help interested parties find it. Thanks very much.

Sorry, messed up on the pictures.

I do recognize the winch. I bought one just like it at a swap meet. I mounted it on the front of my trailer. Mine didn't come with a handle though. Stan

When I was about 12 I raked leaves at a mansion owned by wealthy tenants along a river. They
also had a large building near the river and I opened the door and it was where they stored their motor boats. Had a winch like that to pull the boats out of the water. I don't think they pulled them out. They had a couple that lived on the property and took care of the place.
Their son was in my wife's class and the owners put him through college. Hal

I had one similar to that years ago that came off of a 1920’s or 1930’s Gravel pump, it was used to raise and lower the suction pipe (stinger) on the pump. There was an A frame on the back of the boat that the cable went up over and as they pumped they would use the winch to lower the stinger until it was almost straight down from the boat, that was about 20 foot depth on this boat.

Sounds like it has many applications, I guess that is a good thing in some ways. Thanks to everyone for the interesting stories.

those look exactly like the ones that were mounted on 2 old mechanical wreckers i had,[ holmes 500, as well as a holmes 750] and used to raise and lower the recovery booms, 1 on each side of the main mast, there may have been other uses for these too

Zach what you have looks to be 5 ton crab. As you know I am a millwright and we use them all the time. We mount them on a heavy stand anchored to the concrete and use them to pull in leg belts and also to move heavy equipment. Used four of them last weekend to lower a new mixer into a feedmill basement. We have electric drive motors we use along with the manual handles.

Yes - My old Holmes 750 split boom wrecker had one for each side.As you say, to lower the booms - not to lift anything. The main winch was a powerhouse and if you cound hook something it would move it.

correct, lol i would not want to even try to use those boom winches to lift a load, no longer than the hand crank was, but the main winches now thats different, the 750's if i remember right were rated at 50,000 lbs each ive pulled so hard with them it dragged the trucks snatchblocks thrue 4 layers of hiway the truck tires were level with the road- and were on top of the blocks
