Happy anniversary!

Eight years ago this very morning, those stinking useless Holstein dairy cattle went out of here after the morning milking!
I wasted many a night laying awake, wondering if I was doing the right thing selling them, wondering how I was going to make a living without them. ALL for nothing. What a misserable way to kill yourself and break even! I'll take my Angus any day of the week!
In the words of MLK Jr,free at last, free at last.

OH YEA! Slithering up between those smelly things, getting whacked in the face by a dirty tail. Who wouldn't miss that.
No thanks. All I have to do to get my daily share of bovine contact is stand by the feedlot gate and some curious critter will wander up and want a little bit of pettin on the nose.

Man time really flies by. I remember you commenting about getting rid of them, but it sure doesn't seem like it was that long ago.

My ten yr anniv was Sept 23, 10:30 AM, but who"s keeping track? Last one on the trailer kicked me in the same spot she got me 3 weeks before, and it was almost healed up. After growing up with them, and dairying 30 years on my own, don"t miss them a bit. But they are tasty.

Congradulations! BTDT.......'ceptin mine was a commercial cow/calf beef operation. I kinda tapered off; was running almost 300 head of mama cows; when I quit the row cropping, decided to keep about 80 head of mamas and 2 or 3 'stock cows'. Kept them for 3 or 4 years and thought that I was doing the same thing I'd been doing.....just not quite as many hours. And..........to answer Allan, I had 'em (started with a half-interest in one heifer)for 47 years; haven't missed them one single time

Gotta tell ya,

Don't miss the work; not even one little bit!

But I do still miss those big cows being around. Oh well, guess these Angus will have to do. :>)

Funny, Thanksgiving day is my anniversary but in the other direction. It was 19 years ago on Thanksgiving day that I put the first pail of milk in the bulk tank to be sold. I was 19 at the time, fresh graduated from MOO U. Started with 6 cows. I can remember the first milk check, 960.00. I made some bad decisions and with the economy, in 2000 sold my 70 head. And I have spent the last 10+ years fighting to get back in business. I have 5 of them in milk now so I get dirty everyday besides working on a 200 cow neighboring dairy. Don"t know for sure how or when but C268 is reserved and will ship milk again.

Knowing what I know now,if I was in your shoes and had it to do all over again,I'd trade those cows off for some good Angus brood cows right now and save myself a whole bunch of aggravation and long days of wasted family time.
But that's just me. To each his own. I was pretty adamant at one time too that dairy was the only way to go,but probably because that's what I grew up with and what everybody else was doing around here.
I just remember there was one herd of Angus in the neighborhood, just south of town and I was mesmerized by them. Always wanted a herd instead of those black and whites that I'd been born into.

Yeah, it can be a lot of work just to run a financial treadmill. I like the Holsteins but the only way I would even think about it is if I could have a RHA of 28,500 or preferably over 30,000 lbs. Also, the only debt would be on a minimal amount of equipment and being able to afford key pieces of equipment such as a manure spreader, baler, mower-conditioner, etc. once every several years replacing with a NEW or near new piece. Have enough help that I had one or two days I could be away from the barn if I chose. I really never got into the idea of having over 100 milkers other than economic reasons. I guess I will keep dreaming.

Fella east of here sold part of his farm to a factory for $5 mil they say. He moved up the road and is putting up all new buildings bought new equipment and I guess he's gonna farm til it's gone.
