Need help with BS alternator project

At work we have a salt spreader that has a B&S engine with a dual circuit alternator. The alternator is not hooked up and starting the spreader eventually runs the battery dead. I would like to connect the alternator to allow the spreader to charge the battery. As per http://www.willardssmallengines.com/alternator_chart.html I have the G connection. Is anything else required to make this alternator recharge the battery? A regulator? Diode? The battery is a 75 month Napa Group 24. We typically ruin about 1 a year running it like a deep cycle.

Thanks
Aaron

if your motor is similar to the ones I have, one lead is A/C to run lights and the other has a diode inline to make D/C to charge the battery

no regulator, charging system is basically a center tap coil

put a voltmeter on the leads and see what you have, likely a bad diode

This system was home brewed and the charge wire has never been hooked up. My idea was to fuse the DC wire close to the battery with a 5 amp and see if it would charge. I wasn't sure if I needed a regulator or not. Do you think it will work?

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

If you can get your fingers on the plug comming out from under the shroud (two wired and possibly a white plastic housing ) right behind the plastic there should be like a shrink wrap ... feel that part and one side you will feel a lump,, that is the charging wire. and diode.

on the cheaper riding lawnmowers there is no regulator, battery likey to get overcharged on a big lawn

probably why the batteries conk out after 2 years

try yours and see what happens
