Last of the angry farmers??

Well, last of ANY farmers in my town. 30 years ago we had over 50 dairy farms. Now down to 2 or 3.

Farm #1 with the angry signs . . . Was owned by an old friend for 60 years. Then he got sick and had to go to Canada for an operation. He had no health insurance and in Canada - if a US citizen paying cash- you can get work done at 1/3 the price. Afterwards, while recovering he almost lost his right to farm. He had the last farm within village limits where farming is now illegal. The catch is - they can't stop you until you cease to farm for one full year. He went back after 11 months because he had to. Then he sold the farm. New guy who has it now tried running for several political positions and did not get elected. Going by the signs he seems a bit angry. This is in central New York.

Farmer #2 lost the road in front of his farm months ago shortly after hurricane Irene. We got hit with a second storm that did the REAL damage. A mile of county highway got lost in front of his farm. The County refused to fix it for months because they wanted FEMA to take care of it. So he finally got ticked off - got out his hoe, dozer, and tractors and put some fill in. Just enough so he could drive to town. Then the county threatened to sue him I suspect he actually owns the road in front of his barn - but who knows the legal complications here. I own several town roads - but they are still public highways.

So, road is still not fixed - but finally some big equipment has arrived and some work is being done.

Well....at least he put it on a sign and got it out there instead of just letting it fester like I do. lol

LJD, Dame=d Shame. Wonder what ever happened to POWER TO THE PEOPLE? I Know, It got taken away by those who want to rule the world, one inch at a time. I liked the pictures ,buttttttttttt hated the loss of farms. question in my mind JUST WHY. WHATS THE REASON? Dont the farm land bring in enough TAXES????.Farms Slows down the money grubbing developers? Even up here where we live, there are those on the town board who want supreme worthless rules inacted for their benefit. Makes a person really distrust em all, even those who are basicly down to earth and wanting to do the best for all who owns land here. Was also wondering how the road(in the pictures) got so torn up. Flooding?? Thank you for the pictures and the post. Warmest regards LOU.

The town made "farming" and ownership of "farm animals" illegal within the "hamlet." The "hamlet is basicially a certain area where there's a mix of houses and stores. When they passed the law there were still four working farms. Now there's only one left. These laws were passed to avoid animal smells, "road-apples" on the road, buthering on the front lawn, seedy looking farmers who you don't find in the LL Bean catalog, etc. Funny thing is - here in Otsego County NY . . . chickens are allowed to free-range anyhwere. So if you live in town, you cannot legally own them, but the chickens are allowed to be there. 200 years ago, cattle had free-range rights too - but that ended.

I helped someone defend himself a few years back when she got charged with illegal "farming." She had a pet pony and goat. We won and the town basically lost. The reason? Town law does not specifically define "farming." So - I made it clear to the town attorney et. al. that they can't apply these laws to just some people and not others. Agriculture law in New York covers dogs and cats. So, it's easy to construe that if this anti-farming law was enforced - nobody could own cats and dogs. And how about mowing your lawn? How is that different from mowing hay? I pointed out over 50 such things and the charges got dropped. But, I'm sure it will happen again.

All our damage here was from flooding. When Irene hit, we were fine. But then got the ground soaked pretty good. Shortly after we got hit with a second rain storm and that one washed out bridges, roads, farm fields, houses, etc. FEMA is still here wasting money. In fact, we just watched a convoy of FEMA house trailers arriving. How many months later? Sorry for my lack of compassion but if someone lives next to a creek the we all know is going to flood sometime - and they chose to live there with no insurance - tough luck as far as I'm concerned. If my house blows off this mountain top - I know I will get nothing from the government -except maybe a fine for littering.

That's the problem with NYS, too many laws. They've had longer than most states to make them. Surprised that you can walk outdoors and take a deep breath without a law against it or requiring you to get a "permit".
God help us if the rest of the USA gets that way.

Yes, I've driven through many times on the way to the Adirondacks. Bridges out all over and they got more wind damage then we did. Many electric poles and wires were down. Especially around the Lake Piseco area near Speculator.

Town leaders can idiots. Had two towns here in Texas. Kick out all the mexicans. That they claimed were illegals. Some were and some were not. One year after the little celabration party they had. It came out that between the two towns. They had a twenty million dollar shortage in town taxes. Empty stores and were over run with empty apartments and empty rent houses. Now after all the damage was done. They are letting the ones they ran out come back.

Please vote the stupid bums out and tell your friends to do it too. nnalert Clinton adopted NY for some reason and thats a whole bunch of stupid bums live there. And lastly, stop selling food to stupid bums. Maybe they will fade away.

Jde Thanks .Now I've got the picture. What a elluva note when chickens can run loose (I'de get em all rounded up and have one heck of a barbacue, all invited EXCEPT TOWN elders) think on how that reasoning would go over before tax time lol.Wondering just who does the fools think feeds this country?, Yuppies who dresses in their finery and has lunch on their lawns sure wouldn't like the smell of road applesause on their beamer tires. As for Fema, look a N.O.disaster. Blind leading the blind. What a waste of money poured down many of different rat holes. I'm of the same opimion as you ,when it comes to people building in a flood plane. Every so often(more then I like) our insurance Carrier tries to increase our coverage to cover people who make claims against em for flood plain damage in other states as well as ours. Always one teriffic fight with threats comming from us to change Insurance Companies. So far, notta. We have NO MORGAGE on our place so actually we could tell em to GO POUND SAND and take what ever chances that might occure from a fire ,wind storm rain -hail etc. Ofcourse we would have to pay for fire dept call, cleanup and any thing else attached to the damage.Glad you took on the establishment,on behalf of the other person. Common sence prevails sometimes and makes em look like the misers they truly are.LOcal government is mostly INTRUSION into peoples life style, and like I said, Most want to rule the world ,one inch at a time, and they will if no objection comes from the ballot box. Gotta stand up sometimes folks. Thanks again .warmest regards LOU.

thanks for a good laugh, and hooray to both farmers. i gather that daniel is not planning to run for office again soon- at least he would need 438 different voters next time. lol
was the second farm sending milk? presumably not, or he would have made the papers about the second time he had to dump milk.
fema sure hasn't set any speed records with the trailers.

Lou,

Based on my experience some 30 years ago the only place you could buy flood insurance was from a federal government agency - don't remember the name of it. Private insurance companies were not allowed to or just plain would not sell flood insurance.

Has this changed or is your insurance company pulling a fast one on you about their paying claims for flood losses?

Pete

not far from us, in a town called Edison NJ there was a family farm ,and the town said to the farmer they want to buy it to make a park, He said I dont want to sell it ,my mom is up in age,and she wants to live here the rest of her life, They eminent domained the farm, the farmers mother and family had to get out,It has been years since that happend, and the town has done nothing with the property,it sits there empty,

Most damage done today is political, sinec normal people will fix broken things, but politicians will only try to make money from a disaster, which is how their political career will end.

I used to live over in Woodbridge, same thing happened in one of the Brunswick(s), township or what have you, 10 years ago + or - condemned a classic old farm, applied eminent domain, was like a 3 generation family or something, town needed it for a park, maybe its the same one you describe. It was in the home news tribune, an article published about it as I recall.

I noticed someone mentioned nnalert adopting New York, so I have to inject some humor.

Do you know what Bill did with his first 50 cent piece?

He married her----
