steering wheel removal

i have a 1953 naa that i am having trouble removing steering wheel.
i have tried a idler arm puller and 3 way gear puller...with both slipping off.

seems the back side of the wheel doesnt allow enough lip for gear puller to grab/lock on.

Help!

Make a'non slip' puller...Take 2 pcs 2 1/2 x 1/2" flat bar 6 " long.Cut a 'notch' in one to fit around the steering column.Drill a 1/2" hole through each end of both pcs 1" in.Put around the wheel and evenly tighen the two bolts..A sharp rap and the wheel should pop righjt off.Soak the area with PB blaster(or equivelent)first.

ok so i have to fabricate a coller to bolt around the base of steering wheel and then "rap" upwards from side to side of bracket i suspect?

My H steering wheel was so rusted on I had to use PBlaster, propane, bearing pullers, 3-lb. hammer, and wait for days as I increased the torque on the puller each day. Finally came off. They are REALLY rusted in place.

Are you putting a new wheel on? If so just cut that one parallel to the shaft with a sawsall and hammer a cold chisel in the kerf, andpeel it off.

You might want to research this topic on the Ford board archives. There have been numerous discussions about this topic.

If you try to pull the wheel off by brute strength, pulling with your whole body, leave the nut on several threads. So when the wheel lets loose from the shaft, you don't go flying over the back of the tractor with the loose wheel in your hands. Apparently this has happened before, and people say it really hurts when you land.

I would think that using a puller could work if you put something like a bearing separator on the shaft below the wheel for the puller arms to hook to. Good luck!

Put one hand on wheel at 9 oclock the other at 3. Do a push pull alternating back and forth. A little oil on shaft. Worked for me . DAN

I used a 3-jaw puller. I bought 3 small clevises that would fit over the steering wheel spokes. Putting these on changed the griping ares of the puller 90* so the jaws would attach. If the wheel doesn't pop right off hit the center bolt on the puller with a heavy hammer and tighten some more. Worked for me, several times. HTH

If this gets otherwise hopeless, can you remove the wheel and colume and place it on the press? I realize that may be a bit extreme, yet, if things get to that, there isn't much rust and drag that can withstand even a 6 ton press.

KUDOO"'s to all you guys/gals who helped me with my steering wheel removal problem.
Thank you: Gordo,DeltaRed,GeorgeRaush,Hal/EasternWashington,WillGreenwald,Bernie,BobHuntres and Bendee for all your ideas! Now your all may laugh at me but i wanted to do this as cheeply as possible so the method that worked and was the most inexpensive was to spray sterring shaft top with WD40,2nd day i used mallot/wood block with a few swift hits,3rd day resprayed with WD40 and repeated..and WALLA ...it came off! Now to dive into the steering box and see what needs replacin! GO FORD!!! Murfreesboro, TN
