13 wide rim vs 12 wide rim tire mount

How much difference, or trouble would it create if I put a tire recommended for a 13" rim on a 12? ( I'm talking about the width, such as on a 13.6X38)

Most tires have a range of rim widths, as long as you're not trying to fit the widest tire for a 13" rim on a 12" rim you should be okay

We run 13.6x38's on 11 inch rims both on the farm and for pulling, they would be just fine on 12 inch also. If you would put them on 13 inch rims the sidewalls would be straight and you might have to run a little more pressure to get the tread flat under load, but it would work.

You can safely go an inch wider or narrower than the width of the rim, using old size markings. A 13.6 is actually an old size 12, so it is perfect for a 12 inch rim. The decimal sizes reflect the bulge of the tire, not the rim width, which is narrower. Some say the decimal reflects the face of the tread- I disagree, since some tires are pretty rounded on the face of the tread, while others have square shoulders, while the bulge is constant. When you go beyond that inch limit they look and act funny.
