Copper head gaskets

I have a couple copper head gaskets that are used. I was told by a old mechanic that in years past they would soak the gaskets in water and they would expand and be reused. Anyone ever done this? Some of these old not so popular tractors are getting hard to find gaskets for. Any thoughts? Stan

if they are solid copper you need to heat the whole thing cherry red and quench it in a tub of water...its called annealing the gasket...i've never had to replace a copper head gasket unless it was burnt thru.

I learn something new everyday. I always thought that the idea was to re-soften the solid copper gasket so it would seal again. My understanding was that you warmed it with a rosebud torch tip and let it cool on its own, but I haven"t tried it yet.
