Old stallion (been a gelding for a couple months now) got out yesterday when I was moving a water tank thru the gate. Usually just stands there or eats a little waiting on me to put him back. Got thru with the tractor and went to get him, his head went up and he looked across the woods in the direction of the mares, whinnied and was gone. Figured I knew where to find him and was just gonna take the tank home, grab the car and go get him...... Got thru the woods to the edge of town and he was standing by the fence of a little girl's back yard waitingon his goodies....
Her dad says he takes her everyday to the pasture about the same time and he is standing there waiting on her. She's in a wheelchair and a little slow but he says she really lights up when he's around. Let her give him something herself and let her set on him for a little bit. Made her day.... 2 days ago, he almost killed a dog that got in the pasture. Go figger....

Its one of those things in nature, the animals just know that things are different in these situations. I guess they sense the love, affection and trust in these types of situations. I think to have never been around and cared for animals leaves a hole that can not be filled any other way. There comes a joy from being around a situation like this that make it all worth while. This child will never forget times like this. And you thought you lacked people skills.

The dog is a predator, The girl gives him a tid bit, Think they are smart enough to work that out.
Good story though.
Dogs in homes for the age has a similar effect.

I used to do work at nursing homes. People looked like zombies with nothing to do. Was at one where someone dumped some kittens in the parking lot. Worker took them inside. I could not believe how fast the people came alive. Animals have a way of bringing life to people.

So true Bendee. My dad is in a home and a few weeks ago I brought my grandaughter (his great grandaughter) in for a visit. While there, the volunteer who handles the therapy animals came in with an Irish Wolfhound. You can see how the kid took second bill while that dog was in visiting!

See there Dave...you're not as tough as you thought you were. Mean on the outside...gentle as a lamb on the inside. Looks like you and that old stallion are just alike.

What your old guy did does not surprise me. Many times horses have a "sense" about the people around them and behave accordingly.

Your old guy knew that little girl needed him to be gentle and he responded accordingly.

my Dad is in a nursing home and I take our 2 Shi-Tsus nearly every time I visit they have gotten to know many of the residents and who will pay attention to them, and who has no interest which are few.

Now we have to call it Horse Sense.. He just learned a lesson.

Thanks for the story Dave, Great to see even an animal can have compassion for a human.
