OT-B D Nuclear question.

Why are the reactors at the Bruce getting refurbished? I thought Ontario had an excess electricity problem which is costing millions to get rid of.

It's a long story involving corrupt politicians, under the table deals, the rise of the Chinese manufacturing empire. Vested interests from US utilities, the lack of planning by OPG management and the lack planning/unrealistic planning by politicians. Plus special interest groups and the media who have no clue.
Nuclear is a high $$$ target for professional parasites in legal, business and the media.

My understanding is the excess energy is only due to the downturn in the economy. In our province the pulp mills shutting down are all thats saving us from buying power in the US more.

I imagine they are refurbing Bruce now since we paid to learn how to refurb the CANDU first in NB. Risk is lower now its been done.

Way back when the retube of Pickering A was performed by the Hydro Construction local 1788. Units 1 & 2 took 2-1/2 years, the first time any Candu had ever been re-tubed. Unit 4 took 9 months from shutdown to a return to full power.
How long did it take the NB and Bruce units?
Then policy changed and the company decided to save money using outside contractors. A 800 million overhaul of all four Pickering A units grew to 4 billion and only two units operate.
Bruce Power has been ripped off on the 1-2 restart by years and billions by scheming contractors.
Back when Ontario Hydro performed their own maintenance. There was no incentive to delay overhauls.

We are still working on ours here in NB. Shut down around april 2008. Contractors have a saying "refurb is our friend, never let it end".
