I Have people calling from Texas- Oklahoma wanting to buy square bales of hay. How many 14x18x 36" bales will fit on a flatbed semi truck and how many in a 53' van ?

At least 650 on a flat 53 foot. More on a step deck. LOTS of work to get a van loaded unless you can push them on in stacks but you waste some space. Double deck cattle pots are the worst to load.

I don't know numbers but a friend who hauls a lot of hay has a nice trailer. It is a drop deck van with a roll over tarp roof that you roll from on the ground. It has two side doors, but at most places that he picks up they drop them in from above.

In a 53ft. enclosed van you can get 648, stack them strings to the side, 6 wide and 6 high, 36 to a row, 18 rows tight and the doors will just close. We use a 2 wheeler to run them in, 53ft. is a deep hole when you first start.

I sent a flatbed open trailer to Texas with 560 bales stacked flat in August.
Went as high as legal...about 12'-6"

wheni was in hay buiness we got 540 bales in 53x 102 van 6 wide 6 high on edge. loaded with skidloader and grapple. ha to push doors with skidloader lightly to get shut in the end.
