unsticking a combine or large tractor

Just curious what you guys use to pull out a large combine or one of the large four wheel drive dual wheel combines? mainly interested in what type tow strap, size chain or cable.

I had a large cable (1 inch diameter)that had a large hook on both ends. Neighbor has several D8's and D9's. He has a 1 1/2 cable on a trailer that has a snatch block and a D8 with a winch on it.. I know on the 9's as soon as it starts to spin he stops and pulls with a 2 inch cable. He said if a 9 was really stuck he probably couldn't get it out and would have to hire someone, he has been lucky so far.

Well we have two pieces of inch and a half cable that have loops in each end to pull things out with. If one of our four wheel drives gets stuck we use one of the other fourwheel drives to pull it out. If its really stuck we use our dozer as last resort. Same when combine get hung up. Which last time I got our combine hungup it took 8 hrs and our biggest fourwheel drive and a front wheel assist hooked together along with our case backhoe digging to get it out. Not a fun day.

The guys that farm our homeplace have a 1 1/2" or 2" hawser from a tugboat that they use, along with a 275 HP New Holland 4WD tractor. Last year and year before they had a CASE/IH 625 Cotton Express that stuck a few times and that worked for them. They found out as soon as it started to sink etc- STOP! and call for help. They traded the Case for a John Deere picker that makes the round cotton bales this year- awesome machine!

We have a wrecker service with an Army 6X6 front and rear winches, plus three big rigs for recovery work, he stayed busy this spring not so much this fall. Dry Dry Dry.

we were doing custom harvesting a few years ago with our 1460 combine with tracks and a mudhawg when the hydro drive splines stripped out it was 1/4 mile from the road our 3588 2+2 with duals would not make it out too it. we had a local guy with a wrecker winch it to the road and up on our trailer took 4 hours he charged us 250 bucks which we told him was too cheap but he said it was fun he now gets all our business.

Two 50 ft heavy cables backed by a 100.000 pound rated 30 ft poly p rope, lots of log chains and one or two Steiger 300+ hp 4X4's applied as needed.
The poly p rope has just enough stretch to allow the Steigers to hit the end of the rope at 5 plus mph. That extra inertia really increases our ability to pop em out of deep mud.

A long time ago when I was a boy my Dad was combining with a gas Massey Harris combine (dont know the model) when it got stuck real bad. What can you do with a small boy and a grey diesel Ferguson, not much as we found out. Dad eventually came up with the idea of roping a very large timber bulk across the combine drive wheels, this had the effect of increasing out wheel grip as well as some diff lock. It was absolute torture on the clutch but the combine eventually managed to rise out of the ground and move forward a few feet, this was just enough to allow her onto more solid ground. Dangerous stuf but it worked. I know this is tiny stuff compared with what you guys do but none the less a big problem for dad 45 years ago.
