steering question 53 ford naa

upper is super easy

remove steering wheel

disconnect gauges and lines to stuff in dash.

unbolt dash from hood

remove dash

remove bat box and stuff bolted to top of steering column. wires.. etc.

pull steering column, upper thrust bearing sets on top of worm shaft.

check upper race.. it might need to be snatched out and repalced. check upper steering column bushing too

reinstal, using correct number of shims to get just a smidgon of preload.

lube box.. i prefer 0# 0r 00# grease.. can get a 1/8npt grease fitting to go into the fill port, and jd sells tubes of cornhead 0EP grease. 2 tubes.. etc.

adjust sector backlash.. etc..

thanks guys for the references, CharlieNJ the link didnt work for me. Could you dbl check site address for me please

the right side gear arm has about a 1/2" of up and down movement at the spline when steering wheel is turned. Will I be looking for a worn bushing or worn teeth on the sector gear?
anyone?

if the sector gear shaft has 1/4" movement up, or 1/4" movement down, when you start rotating the steering wheel, then either the bushing diameter on the arm is way worn ( less likely ) or the bushings are totally shot.

you will not get that box to adjust or seal without new bushings.
