Neighbor said yep it was his. Now how do you shoot an arrow from a compound bow by accident unless your just plain dumb?? He told me he stood up on his stand and hit the release on the bow. But why would you have it pulled back unless you where going to shoot at something??? Guess conservation will get to ask him how and why and maybe what the heck where you doing since it flew at least 400 yards. Has me thinking maybe I need to think about how unsafe hunting is any more which is sad that people have no clue how to hunt safe

Guy just got killed Sunday here in Nebraska "duck hunting". Running up an inbankment to jump a pond and gun went off. He's not with us anymore.

I hunt alot and see it first hand all the time, guys not respecting their guns. Its amazing we don't hear of this more.

People keep saying how "dangerous" guns are. When the problem is that paople no longer have any idea how to safly handle thier gun.EDUCATE them! Then you have the people who are uneducateable.A gun is a tool, like a hammer,saw...They need to be educated in proper and safe use.Steve

Did you have livestock in the pasture or a piece of equipment he may have been aiming at?? If not, I'd just let it go.

It's just one arrow!! If I found 50 of them I might mention it, but it's only one..... pick it up and use it for a garden stake. Maybe it really did get away from him, maybe he shot it over there on purpose, what difference does it make?? He's out an arrow and you're all wound up over it... sounds like everybody looses.

Makes me happy for the neighbors we have,

Last Spring, one of the many rains blew through and the neighbor was dashing home with his truck to get his soybean seeds under cover. Half a dozen empty seed bags blew out of the bed, just as he was going past the house. When the rain stopped, I went out and picked up the bags and put them in the burn barrel. Half an hour later, the neighbor stopped in and wanted to know if I knew what happened to the sacks. He apologized up and down when I told him I picked them up. If the worst thing that happened that day was that I had to pick up some bags, I can live with that. It's not like he's throwing McDonalds trash out the window as he drives by.

Seems like there are more and more posts on here everyday about how other people are A$$holes... in the words of Tim Wilson "...If you've been married 9 time's, he77, maybe it's you...." Whole Song

Sorry for the rant, not aimed at anybody in particular, It just seems like everything is somebody elses fault lately.

My shoulder is acting up again and I got nobody to blame it on, so I'll snap at you guys.

Tim

Spring of last year we got 8 1/2 inchs of rain in less than 24 hours.
The water washed my neighbor's cornstalks out of his field, and they "drifted up" against some of my pasture fence, pulling out fence posts for an 1/8 th. of a mile and breaking strands of barbwire.

It didn't occur to me at the time, but maybe I should have gotten mad at him and asked him to fix my fence, since his cornstalks tore it down.

Now how many of us have done something stupid ,even if accidental, and right afterwards told ourselves "that was dumb" and were darn glad no one got hurt and then learned not to do it again.

I sure have.

My county received a disaster declaration for the flooding rains(mine was 6-1/2 inches in 3-4 hours) and will be paying for corn stalk/debris removal and fence reconstruction.

My neighbor missed his practice target and put one in my pumpkin feild. He came and told me and asked if I would keep an eye out for it for him. No big deal to me but at least he did come over and tell me. Another time he shot one at a ground hog in my feild and lost one. I was just happy he shot at it. He feeds my cattle when I'm gone and keeps an eye on things. I'm glad to have such a good neighbor. Like the others say, I try to make good neighbors, you never know when you may need them.

Ever wonder how many bullets are lying around? They gotta go someplace and most rifles will shoot over 1 mile,as long as he wasn't shooting at me I wouldn't sweat it and he could kill all the deer he wanted.

How? You raise the bow at 45 degree angle, draw it back with a trigger release, just touch the release button by accident and off it goes. Perfect angle for max flight and it the bow is 70 draw weight before breakover...it'll fly.
I don't draw my bow that way. I hold it straight out and pull straight back but then I'm not pulling 60-80 pounds. If I pulled that much,I'd raise it also.
This is an accident, plain and simple. Give him his arrow back and get on with being a good neighbor.

Last summer I was sitting in my back yard under the shade tree, (I live in the city) when THUNK. I looked at the side of the tree and an arrow was stuck in it, then looked across to my new neighbor. He was target practicing and had the target propped up on my fence. Not much of a good shot I guess. I came unglued. Luckily I have new neighbors now.

Down in Oregon a soldier just returned from one of the sandboxes was out hiking. In the same area was a man hunting with his grandson. Grandpa saw something dark moving in the bushes and shot at it. Killed the soldier. Press reported it as a "hunting accident", but that sure sounds like negligence to me.

Big Fred -
That "accident" is why FL changed their laws. Now any "accident" is an "INCIDENT" for which they can levy criminal charges if needed.

One arrow I would let it go. I would talk with my neighbor and share my concerns and ensure he understands.

As a bowhunter myself I can see this happening if his bow draw weight is set to high. Often for new bowhunters it seems to be bragging rights to say I shoot at 80# etc. I shoot mine at 68# but I can draw that sitting down as I hunt from elevated stands.

If he needs to point his bow in the air just to draw it back and then settle in on sight picture 1 of 2 things - bow draw weight is to high or 2 new archer and he has not been practicing enough to develop the strength needed to draw back. It takes practice to be proficient. Bow hunting can be a humbling experience but in the end you become a much better hunter and woodsman.

Getting off my soapbox. . .

If it had landed some place other then my pasture with horses in it I would not be as worried but it landed less then 50 yards from 3 tractors and I can just see it hitting a tire and having a flat or worse hitting a horse

I tried that 10 or so years ago when they first got the place. The first thing they did was tell me what I could not do on my own place and what I could not drive in with etc. They then went along and posted there land which is alright by me but then they also do not stay on there side either and or drive around there place on 4 wheelers during deer season making lot of noise

couple pictures on shop wall at a JD dealer- looks like a 4440 or so with couple arrows in back tire. Scribbling along side notes "wrong deere", "no Deere Hunting", "this cost $400.00" and a couple the potty filter probably won"t let through. Fancy bows and extra equipment during a "primitive" hunt lead to pointy sticks with tail feathers flying all over- go back to longbows and gloves only. Maybe require a serial number on the arrows like the Brady bunch wants on bullets and shell casings. (Teasing Alert!) RN

I shot an arrow into the air, It fell to earth I know right where.

For though I shot it from afar, It pierced the radiator in my car.

That is one of the few things I ever remembered out of Boy's Life magazine in the 50's.

Did it have a broadhead on it? I know what you mean about idiots shooting at anything that moves. Don't know which is worse, poachers or idiots...

For the life of me, how in the world do you actually shoot somebody on accident?? I don"t know about you guys, but when I deer hunt, whether during archery, blackpowder, or rifle season, I :

1. Identify my target- Is it a deer? Is it a doe, nubbing buck, or antlered deer? Do I want to shoot it? If it"s not archery or Doe week, does get to walk. Nubbing and immature bucks get to walk. I make the call to pull the trigger only after careful study.

2. Before pulling the trigger, or release, I pick out the exact hair I put the pin or crosshairs on. Right behind the shoulder, in the heart. A little lower with my bow, as deer tend "squat" when they hear the arrow release. In my sight picture, the only thing I should see is a deer, and only a deer.

To shoot wildly into the bushes at movement is criminally negligent. I don"t understand the logic.

I would never dream of "shooting into the bushes".

I made that mistake when I was learning to shoot. I pointed the bow in the air and lowered it as I pulled. It is much easier to pull that way.

I now level the bow and pull back.

Yes it had a broad head on it. Had the conservation agent out and showed him where I found it and where the guy had to be and he said how in the world could he have put it there unless he was holding it at a 45 degree angle up and then let it go so yep idiot and that is the type of person that scares me big time.

Since when is an arrow in your pasture a little thing. That could be my grand kids dead or a horse or a tractor tire. Those are not little things those are big things and life is to short and fragile to want an arrow where it should not be. Being a hunter safety instructor to me that is a mistake that should never happen

Oh by the way just to get you more into how bad it could have been. The arrow was less then 30 yards from 5 tractors. Less then 50 yards form both the horse barn and hay barn and less then 150 yards from the house. So I'm sweating the small stuff. And when we walked out into the filed it was not there but less then 30 minutes latter we walked back and it was. We could well have been hit by it. Sorry when it comes to bullets and arrows in my book there is not accident just stupid people that should not have guns or bows
