Just spread some fertilizer on my hay ground

I just finished spreading a little bit of fertilizer on my hay field. Not nearly enough - but all I could afford.

18-46-0 is $735.00 per ton

34%N Ammonium Nitrate is $470.00 per ton

60%K Potash is $660.00 per ton

Final mix ended up at 14-8-30

Field lime is $20.00 per ton spread on the field. I had that done about a month ago.

I'm seriously thinking about abandoning making my own hay next year and just buying it locally. I could turn the cows into the hay field for pasture and come out about the same on cost and save a whole lot of labor.

But then again, I probably won't.

what part of TN are you in Tom? I'm in southern middle. I haven't priced any Fert. since spring. I've got to put a little on some wheat hay if I can ever get the wheat in the ground.

I know what ya mean.Sread on 40 acres after 1st crop and was really shocked when i got the bill.Could have took the money for the fert. and bought some hay with it.Probably would have come out the same if not ahead.

Chris,

I live near Columbia / Spring Hill in Maury County. I buy my fertilizer at the Maury County Farmers Co-Op. They also have a large fertilizer outlet in Mt. Pleasant.

I bought my lime earlier in the year from a guy that advertises every day in the Columbia Daily Herald. He and I had a difficult time communicating and I hope to find someone else for future purchases. I thought that his price was good, but I had a hard time getting him to come to my farm when he said he would. Also, he spread the lime too heavy on part of my hay field so he ran out with about 2 or 3 acres untreated. He wouldn"t do anything about his mistake.

Where are you located? We might be neighbors.

here are my thoughts as I sell hay: I need to raise my price, as corn price goes down, fertilizer cost will go down too maybe, you can grow twice as much hay per acre as grazed off amount, if you graze hay, it gets fertilized naturally, if everyone puts less fertilizer down, less hay grown means price of hay goes up. Final thought, I need to raise my price.

I haven"t seen any fertilizer spread on hayfields around here for a long time. Everyone uses the sludge from the sewer plant. Opens up your sinuses pert near a month every time they spread it.
