Dad was gonna start hauling manure today and didn't even get one load out. He was in the field but not running yet, and he went through a trench I dug with the loader back in the spring to drain a hole.

The drawbar on the 285 just plain snapped off. No warning, no fatigue marks, just snapped off at a hole before the drop.

He wasted the rest of the day tracking down a new (used) one, only to discover that our loacal dealer had about 30 on a skid that they scrapped out not too long ago. He went to the bone yard and got one with a 2" drop (ours was a 4" drop) out of a 1085. They took it off the tractor while it was there, and it had MF written on it in paint marker so it was purchased from a junk yard before. Makes it the 3rd tractor this drawbar is going on...

Just glad the drawbar didn't decide to snap on the road while hauling loads of corn silage...

So am I!!would have been a disaster.I use a support from the top link braket to the drawbar to support the heavy(stackwagon)loads to prevent just that same thing from happening.Glad everthing was OK.Steve

i had one snap like that on a JD 2755 with a spreader on it. I had it welded by a professional welder has held now for 6 years. He claimed his weld was stronger then the draw bar it self.

Was thinking about welding it up at work. While I'm not certified, my welds are solid. I would put a large bevel on both sides and make sure it's got full penetration.

I also borrowed the mag drill from work and drilled the hole in the spreader's toungue out a little bit so there is more slop. I made up the new hitch this spring and mad ethe hole the same diameter as the old one was, but it was worn more egg shaped.

The new draw bar is just too high compared to the old one. While it's nice that it's now the same height as the one on our Oliver 1600, the PTO is just too low compared to the drawbar and now our baler, haybine, green chopper, and everything else is gonna need to be adjusted, and then they won't line up on the 1600 if we need to use that tractor on them. Spreader even makes a little more noise than it used to in a corner.

sanped a few on my 6610 with the mixer. i have a steep hill to go up and the first time i was just starting the climb and it snaped and went right into the road and across the road is a drop off into the feild about 8ft. what a disaster that would have been. the second time was when i was leaving the bunk and it broke right as i was pulling into the road. at least it was flat there. lucky this load i didnt have to fill so full but if was a regular load i would have never been able to pic it up with the skid steer. i juats barley got it out of the road as a car was coming over the hill right befre the bunk.
