Inherited my late FIL's post hole auger. Brought it home today and was noticing it was leaking what looked like oil out of the gearbox. What came out was rather thin, and was wondering what should be in there. I would assume it would be a heavier weight oil than what it looked like. Any ideas?

One would expect 80-90 or at the most 140-weight gear lube. For those that muck along without correctly fixing things, using "cornhead grease" will work and not leak much.

we always filled'em with used motor oil whenever they leaked dry. Works for few holes til you get better stuff. Some've used'em that way for 20 yrs.

I guess gear oil would be the best, 90 or even 140, that is what we used in our MF post hole digger. Considering how slowly they run and the amount of revolutions one of those things would actually turn in a season compared with say, a disc mower or rotovator. Not much chance of getting a hot gearbox!
