Business ID (EIN) number

I was remembering a post on here a while back about getting a business ID (EIN) number, and the reasons for and against it. Even though self employeed I had gone alot of years without getting one 'just because' I didn't feel like messing with it. Well, I discovered something new today, at least in the state of NC. Having gotten the paperwork done on my service truck over the weekend, actually transferring the title to me, I had to go to DMV to get the plates. Since I tag it for 38,000 lbs it's considered a commercial tag and unlike times past, to get a commercial plate like that you now have to have an EIN number before they will do anything. I don't know exactly when this started here in NC, or if it's a Federal thing, but the guy in front of me had to get one for the first time in quite a few years in business, and a guy that came in as I was leaving, who had been in business for nearly 20 years, was also told he had to get one before they could get all of his tag/registration stuff handled. Add on a new $76 dollar, yearly, 'registration' fee for something that none of the other stuff covers, on top of the other $540 plus in fees, etc they hit you up for on the tag, etc, and it all makes for quite an adventurous day at the DMV. Fortunately my 'day' didn't last but about an hour because there was only one guy in front of me in the Commercial office, but for the amount of money spent in the amount of time it was spent in, it makes me wish I had been somewhere like Victoria Secrets buying gifts for the wife...insteaf of at the DMV....even as skimpy as those outfits are I'd have walked out feeling like I got more for my money than I did with a small rectangle of stamped sheet metal and a couple of sheets of paper ...LOL

So, how many of you have tried getting, renewing, etc a heavy commercial plate recently and ran into this, or is it just an NC thing right now?

The Employee Identification Number is issued so we know who you are in case you forget. Lightheadedness is common after a visit to a govern"mental" office.

WOW! Here in NY my SS# has always sufficed. Just got the renewal notice in the mail for my 54000# truck. It doesn't indicate any changes in requirements. So far as I know I can still renew it by mail, or on-line. Guess I'll find out soon.

my 80,000 lb dump only requires me to sign a paper and have a valid PA driver's license.

Then again, I pay $1750 a year for the sticker on the license plate. It's a big racket. If they made law saying I had to be a business to own that truck, I am pretty sure I would sue the state. I don't have much money, but I would bet the farm against it. I hate the state. I'm getting so sick of all this non-sense. I want to poop on someone's porch.

Yep,

We gotta be able to squeeze every blessed penny out of ya we can, ya know.

Don't want ya makin' a single dime that we don't know about. :>)

It helps the state to make sure you do not slip through the cracks on sales tax and employee tax. Got to use all them rooms in the county court house for something.

I live in Pa. also, agree with you 100%,Been working in oHIo, can buy gas there for $3.19 a gal, cost Me $3.45 here. but please stay away from my porch.

Hey rusted nuts,

IF you have a big truck, and you buy diesel in Ohio, you have to file quarterly reports and pay back the tax on each gallon. Isn't that just super?

I make sure to spit towards the "welcome to pennsylvania" sign every time i cross the border! LOL

I promise not to poop on your porch, although... if I get the squirts from a bad dish, I might not have a choice....

Sometimes, I just wish I could look teh law makers in the eye and kick them in teh shin. Yanno?

I asked the original question about the Fed ID #. When I got mine, the only two questions they asked were if the business would operate a truck over 50,000 pound gross weight (I think that's the right weight) and if there would be any gambling or wagering on the premisis.

I wondered what the deal was with the truck, but since it wasn't going to affect me, I didn't follow up.

The gambling question did crack me up. I was on the speaker phone with the IRS lady, in my bank managers office, I looked up with a grin on my face and the manager was slowly shaking her head no...... she knew what I was thinking and also knew the IRS people have no understanding of farming or a sense of humor. I bit my tongue and we finished without incident.

Had one for years. Really no big deal. Use it instead of your Social number when doing business. File your business tax returns using it and your personal with the Social. Keeps the two entities seperate is all.

You must not file a 2290 and pay federal road tax.. Anyone that files a 2290 Highway use tax has to have the federal number, ssn will not work. Now don,t tell me you are running on public roads and not paying your federal heavy use tax.

John I promis I will not turn anyone in I am just confused..You say a 80,000 dump truck. Do you not have to have proof of FEDERAL ROAD tax paid before they will renew your STATE licence?
