Didn't make another bid on that Oliver 550 last night. If Oliver had built those things 1000 pounds heavier or if I was ready to retire to 40 acres in the hills,I'd have been on that thing like a chicken on a June bug.
Last time I saw one that new and that nice,a dealer was asking $7500 and it didn't even have a loader. This one had a 1510 loader,2514 hours,1974 model, brought $3210 at the end of the auction.
Oh well,I'm pretty bent on having a Massey this next time around.

Were not the late 550's made by David Brown? Not quite the same tractor as the predecessor S55. Pretty hard to find much at that price, however.
Gonna stop raining anytime soon?

The 500 and 600 were the David Browns. The 550s were built through 1975. They were sold in addition to the DB and Fiat builts.

Rain finally ended here last night. I picked some corn on high level ground this afternoon. Don't know if I can get over on the other side of the field where it's a little more rolling tomorrow or if I'll have to move on and try another field. Doesn't look like there's gonna be much of a window,so I'd better get what I can where I can.

My brother's got a 550 w/ 1510 loader, and in all honesty, the rear end gets really light when he lifts anything with it. It's got pressed steel rears w/ fluid in the tires.

Our loader tractor is a Massey 165, and while it's been ridden hard and put away wet, it's a great loader tractor. The operator sits up a little higher, it's got Multi-Power, and it's got bigger rear tires with cast centers to help ballast the loader.

Both are gas, our's being the Continental vs. the later models with the Perkins gas. Nothing wrong with it, just seems like we get a funny look from our dealer everytime we specify when getting an oil filter.

I'd rather be pulling heavy loads with the 165 because it's a little bit heavier to handle a heavy wagon. Faster down the road too.

I am an Oliver guy and wouldn't mind having a 550 in my line up, but after having been on my brother's and seeing what they really are, I'll stick with the 165 for the loader. Was born & raised with Massey and Oliver, so have a soft spot for both. Either way you go you can't go wrong.

I passed a Massey 175 for sale just two days ago on Division St. in Braidwood, IL. while doing a job out that way in Braceville. Was nice to be able to get over that way for the first time in a couple few years. Friendly area and very nice friendly folks around there. It was setting right at the end of someone's driveway just on the edge of town. Was pretty nice. All cleaned up or painted up or well taken care of. Might have been gas, might have been a 3 cylinder Perkins. I didn't stop to look it over. Big for 40 acres, but...

Much good luck.
