Hey Guys, I am thinking of buying a CaseIH 885, two wheel drive with cab. Are these a good tractor? It has 8500 hours and a rebuilt engine. Should either of those items concern me?

Thanks,

They shift hard and don't resale that well. The hours and rebuild should not be an issue but drive the tractor first and see if the shifting will work for you. The ones that have trouble around me have loaders on them. The shift linkage wears and then they will lock in two gears. The parts to fix them are high priced and don't last too long on a loader tractor.

We have an 885 here on the farm. Its a 2wd open station with a 2250 loader. Tractor has 5000hrs on it and i like the tractor, Lots of power, very good cold weather starter. Only problem ive had is the brake calipor seals which is a common problem on the 85 series. Only down fault i have with it as a loader tractor is the hydralics are slow. As far as shifting i don't find them a hard shifter. Keep your shifting linkages clean and tight and you'll have no problems.

They were certainly a good enough tractor. Just remember that there's 8500 hours on the rest of it.
My opinion... the project is just begun if it's got a rebuilt engine.
How long before it needs pumps, brakes, clutches and PTO work?
I'm not saying don't buy it... but buy at an appropriate price.
