I would like to know what else works like barley straw to make the chem reaction in ponds to get rid of algea etc. et. oat, wheat straw or just old hay like the amish use does anything else do the same thing???? we have a real prob. raising barley the deer eat it before we can harvest it loaded with white tail if anyone can find out from a chemist what else works it would be very benificial to everyone thanks guys and gals

Upon decomposition in pond water barley straw releases plant compounds(phenols)which are toxic to many aquatic plants. These compounds are not thought to be present in high concentrations in wheat, oats , old hay. Barley straw is hard to find but is out there if you run an ad in the paper. It works best on algae & mosses. Barley is more common in the central/northern Corn Belt. Possibly someone on this forum has it. You should have your pond weed identified by someone like an extension agent to know what it is and what chemical is recommended or if barley straw will control it. It doesn't work on every pond weed.(like cattails).

There"s a bacteria or enzyme that comes in little 4" bags you can get from a good lake/aquatic type place. It does a great job of breaking down the material in the pond that causes the algae. BUT... bring your wallet and your wife"s purse because they must make this stuff out of gold. Worked great for me but not sure I"ll do it again unless I have to.
