What is dead mail?

I won a 1" Makita impact wrench auction on ebay about ten days ago and when I went today to check on the shipping information the USPS tracking said "Dead mail/Sent to mail recovery center." I have never seen that message before and I don't know what to think. Has anyone had experience with this situation, and does it mean (as I am guessing) that I am probably not going to get the package? Thanks for any advice.

sometimes addresses will get mixed up as to location. My friend uses a Box at one village post office, but his address is psychically in another town/ village. He has had problems with delivery from UPS and FEDEX

When Uncle Vlad ran a mail order bride business he would get that message. I thought it meant something very different.

It could also be spam sent to you or it could also be that someone has stolen your email address . I've had these messages pop up in my email and I've never won or ordered anything off of Ebay !

probably got your address messed up or made unreadable somehow...... You should get on the phone or the first thing smokin to the post office. Also, let the ebay seller know what happened and tell them to trace it quick. If you paid with paypal, you are protected and he is responsible until the package gets to you.

The post office did have a dead letter office where all undeliverable mail went. Usually a bad address and no return address was the cause. Print the message off your computer and take it to your local post office. They might be able to recover it.

Some sellers on Ebay are small operations and things get mixed up. Once I had another person's order arrive at my house. I sent it back to the seller, whoever got my order did not send it back. It took a while but in the end the seller sent me a nicer item than I originally purchased and reimbersed me for my postage and efforts returning the wrong item.

What is dead mail?
