Pretty sad, what's considered attractive these days

I just made a trip to the local mini mart to pick up milk. An attractive young gal has worked for the past year or so apparently attended a "piercing party" recently. She had more hardware tacked on her face than I have in my tackle box. I've apparently missed something here. Why would somebody who has obvious good looks do things to disrupt that? The only piercings I've ever had resulted in a trip to the ER and the outcome certainly was not attractive.

I don't get it either. Just like all the nasty tatoos they're getting too. I wonder how much equity they're building for the future with those tats. I wonder if they'll be able to sell them to buy food if times get rough.

I just don't get all the tatoos. I've put this old frame of mine through a lot of stress and trauma overn the years, but I've never had the lightest urge to deface it with a tatoo.

Even the Marine Corps came down hard on tatoos a coupla years ago. It once was almost a rite of passage for a Marine to get a Marine Corps emblem tatooed on his forearm upon graduating from boot camp. (I never did).

Now, a couple of years ago the Corp put out a directive that no tatoos were acceptable if they were visible while wearing any authorized uniform. Marines who already had visible tatoos had to have them entered into their SRB so they could prove to the Corps that they already had them when the directive came out.

Having been working in and around NYC in the early 90's, the body art trend was becoming popular then, mostly within that big metro area, over the following years its become a lot more than a trend or fad, never used to see so much of it, now its very popular. I'll stay with the factory paint job and avoid the fishing tackle accident some of them appear to have happen LOL !

I think its pretty bad that the world judges people by how they look or haw many piercings they have. I have a great job support three wonderful children and I'm usually the only guy at a tractor show with 15 tattoos. Looks mean nothing its whats inside that counts.

well known DWI defense trial lawyer once said that when picking a jury, if there are no other stronger indications, that he would pick a juror with a tatoo. When asked why, his response was, "well, he/she has been drunk at least once".

I know that I may be very unfair but as a child before television their was a radio program called the FBI. After every episode they always put out a bulletin of one of their 10 most wanted and always there was a description of their tattoo's. Sixty years later I still associate it with low life. If you want to be sucessfull a person needs to look sucessfull. How many lawers, doctors, bankers, corporate executives, and other business people do you meet with tattoo's all over their bodys? How many people would stay on an airliner if the captain got on with tattoos all up and down the side of his face, baggy shorts with the crotch down to his knee caps and a dirty shirt and gruby tennis shoes on. You only need to look back at some old photos of baseball games and you can see even in the depth of the depression people would dress up to go to a ball game. Today I see people go to church and funeral homes looking like they live in a rat hole.

Aint judging you.
But tell me, how are tattoo futures doing these days? How's the stock index for tats doing in this market?
Are you making any money on your "investments"?
I know, I know, it's art don't ya know.
I like art too don't get me wrong. Got a couple of nice prints on my wall that I spent good money for. But if times get tough I can sell them. Or when I die I can hand them down to my heirs.
Can you do that with your tats?
Again, not judging here, just wondering...

I have a DIL that has a piercing in her nose and eye brow. When shes come over to my house she has to take them out before coming inside. She raised heck about it at first. I pointed out that she could do what ever she wanted else where but here I had a say in what was acceptable.

I also haul feed out of several ADM plants. At the one in Clinton there is a very pretty girl that is a guard. I noticed that she was wearing long sleeves back in the hot part of summer. I know her well enough that I asked her why. She said that she could not show any tattoos while on duty. She had both arms covered with tattoos. I really feel sorry for her as she ages and they don't look so cool anymore.

Several of the intelligence units in the Army would discharge you if you got a tattoo. My unit in Nam had a tradition of getting tattoos. I refused. Told a couple of "hard heads" that if they tried to force me then they had better watch out the next life fire drill as there might be a training accident. Never had an issue after that. One unit had a real special tattoo. The Viet Cong really liked cutting them off the guys they KIA or captured.

I don't think it is considered too attractive because the girls that do it seem only to date the boys that do it and vice versa. They render themselves unemployable in many professions and a large percentage of them will be burdens on the tax payers for life.

Apparently trying to be attractive to someone? Some young people, both sexes..like the retro look. Get married to each other and have nice kids too.

There is something about the newer generations that I don't understand. Men/Women/Boy/Girls do that stuff. The most hideous fad I have seen is these people putting in those huge rings inside their ear lobes. They must not get the fact that you don't need help with ear lobes stretching as you get older;)

My EMS class involved removing junk in a emergency. Never had to do it in thirty plus years, and see no reason so far to ever have to do it.

Tatoos are mild now days, anyone seen the hole in the ear lobes? That isn't the limit, the newest one is a hole the size of a fifty cent piece just below the lower lip that goes clear inside the mouth. Yes, you can see their teeth! Talk about a nice look, or fashon statment!

There is no place on the human body that they do not run rods through---male and female. And yes, they put them their also in case you were wondering.....again male and female.

One dude probably 16, had a rod between EVERY hump in his spine. And I will take a wild guess by many of the other places the rods were placed, they did not work for a living, rather just laid on the bed all day, and cry in pain.

It is simply to get attention, and it has been that way for years and generations I suppose.

I agree! Having such tats, and piercings is not how one really looks, it is a way of looking like something else.

ON A SIDE NOTE: Went to Target to buy some DVD-RW discs yesterday and some young pretty lady out there yelling, "legalize Marijuana!". In front of her was a table for people to sign a petition. The only thing I could think is; [b:131164f132]isn't there something more important that she could be worrying about?[/b:131164f132]

I had a waiter come up to our table one evening in a restaurant who had a snake tattooed around his arm and he said "what can I get you." My response was "A different waiter."

Don't you just want to screem at these people and tell them that they have just sucessfully eliminated them selves from at least ninety percent of the best jobs that this country has to offer.

Apparently I've gotten old too.

I'm still wondering about guys with no facial hair except a little chin beard.

Makes them look like dirtballs IMO

I was at a job fair Wednesday, some women was running around with "amazing B*tch" tattoed on her chest just below her neck, Don't think I'd want to hire her. And of course if the pizza plant declined to hire someone because of their peircings it would be discrimination, not that it would be really bad for business if a customer found some of their body jewelry in thier dinner. Talk about differences I had to * the B-word to post, yet she has it tattoed out front to offend everone - yep I sure want to hire those problems- now I'll get sued for discrimination?

who said 'pretty and brains' were in the same sentence...today kids watch toooooo much t-v and video's and idolizes them to change their appearances...i tease my great nephew, he has pierced ear, i ask him where is his purse...lol

If looks mean nothing, then why bother to get he skin art? Looks mean a lot when push comes to shove. By the way, what kind of job do you have?

I just love how they put their tatoos on their best "part" to draw attention to it. Like a big fat cottage cheese thigh or calf or fat flabby arm. Yeah, right, draw attention to your fattest, most unsightly attributes. Then complain about having no money while sporting $2,000 of tatoos and hardware. How about my nieces husband that has a ring through his nipp!e, how manly, not.

Was on the elevator going to court the other day, and a tatted-up, hardware bearing guy had what looked like two fingers of a set of brass knuckles on a chain around his neck. I mentioned that if he was going to court (which he was) he should put them under his shirt. He started to explain that it was a "double ring" with his girlfriend, etc., etc. It did have some rhinestones encrusting the edge, but it sure just slipped onto your fingers like brass knucks. I told him that he was going to have an uphill struggle at sentencing already, with the illustrations and the hardware, and he should make it as easy on himself as he could, under the circumstances.

He went into the blather about freedom of self expression, etc.- I said you gotta be a little practical here- the judge is an old guy like me, and we think pretty much alike. He doesn't give a whit for your "right to self expression"- its trumped by his right to lean on the top end of the sentencing range if he wants to.

Had to send a young lady home before court once because her outfit left far too little to the imagination. Told her I would advise her of her new court date, and to dress like her grandmother next time. She was unimpressed, too.

Have you noticed how many tatoos contain pictures or symbols that are considered to represent evil? I know that most who post on this site are farmers or sympathetic to the industry. Many of us have seen quite a bit of history being made also. (ie. we're gettin' old.) Seems that we are also among the few who still have any values left. After all a nicely painted tractor or truck is a lot more pleasing to the eyes than "artwork" or hardware on the human body!

It may be discrimination not to hire someone with tattoo's but it is not illegal discrimination. It pretty much is illegal only as to age, nnalert or race. We all "discriminate" with every choice we make. I discriminated against Chevy when I bought my Ford pickup. It ain't illegal

It is very sad that so many people judge others based on tattoos or piercings and consider them less a person or even a low life. I guess if these same people were ever in a bad accident, they wouldn't allow someone with a tattoo or piercing to help them because they were such low lifes? I'd be bothered a lot more by some apparently "attractive" person driving home after having too much to drink at the local bar. There are a lot of so called "professional" people that fit in this category. How many lifes are killed by people with tattoo's or piercings compared to drunk drivers? I'm talking about criminals with tattoos. A lot of good people have tattoos and/or piercings. It is wrong to consider them less of a person, just like Hitler was wrong. There's good and bad in everyone and it shouldn't be based on how they look.

But unfortunately, people ARE judged by how they look, whether they like it or not, and whether its fair, or not. That's one of the problems that many folks have- as my dad used to say, "Its not what you want, its what you get that counts." You can say "It ain't fair" all you want, but thats just the way it is.

You're lucky to have a job where that doesn't matter, and I'd be willing to bet its something that depends on a skill of some kind, and doesn't involve much interaction with the public. But its a fact that employers DO discriminate, because there is the perception that one who gets tattoos and piercings is a little on the rebellious side, and may be difficult to work with, not to mention that many potential customers are reviled by it (as shown in the rest of this tread).

If you're the best TIG welder in 3 counties, you can probably get work no matter how you look; but if you're a young person with minimal skills trying to get a start in the grown-up world, its a deal breaker, because there are a lot of more presentable people out there vying for the few jobs available.

Piercings. Can't understand why people go through the pain just to look like a circus freak. My favorite tatoos are the little ones that look like people do themselves, unually on their hands or the ones girls have showing on lower back going under their belt line. Talk about low class tacky. Makes it even worse if the girls also have bleached hair, face or tongue piercings and weigh 300 lbs. YUCK!

A girl that worked as the bookkeeper at my place of employment got a bad infection due to getting a tattoo. She spent over a week in the hospital and the owner of the company was pizzed off about it. Lost work time/productivity/money due to trying to look like a loser.
My dad was in the US navy in the late 50s. His boot camp drill instructor was very honest with the guys and told them straight up, "it looks cool now to get a tattoo on your arm, but when you are 50 years old bouncing your grandson on your knee it isnt cool anymore"
A good friend of mine is now 50 years old and has a tattoo of the Tazmanian devil on his arm bending a boat anchor. My friend says, yep I was a dumb punk and thought it was cool, but not anymore.
The degradation of the US society has really gone down hill since I was in high school 25 years ago. It will be really really bad in another 25 years.
The body piercings are really disgusting and I cant for the life of me understand why anyone would do such a thing. And yes Employers WILL discriminate against those that have hooks/chains/studs/tattoos on their bodies.

Exactly. It is as if these people say, "Hey God look at what I am doing to myself" In the old testament it says to NOT paint yourself with tattoos, because you are supposed to be a temple of the holy spirit.

What if you owned a company and a guy applied for a sales job to represent YOUR company and the guy was covered in tattoos and body piercings? Would he still get the job. The guy or girl would not get the job if I was doing the hiring.
Yes, people discriminate and for good reasons sometimes.

When people look like a freak show for the circus then they get what they deserve.

I was at a farm auction today and saw a young man with nickle size rings inside his ear lobes.
You could see right through his ear lobes, looked like something from africa.

It's a generational thing, don't worry about it. Most people that age accept tattoos even if they don't have any.

In our youth we all did the stupid things that older and younger generations find repulsive too: long hair, crew cuts, shaved heads, mowhawks, cowboy hats, big ugly belt buckles, wierd clothes, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, impractical hot rod cars, noisey ugly motorcycles, not wearing a motorcycle helmet, public drunkeness, beer guts. These were all socially unacceptable to most people but folks our age still like these things or are at least more tolerant of them.

Tatttoos won't kill nearly as many people as smoking cigarettes or drunk driving ever will, and they don't stink up the house or hurt the kids either.

It sounds to me like some of you people need to get a life. theres more to life then judgeing people. i know several welders and heavy equipement operators that have tattoos and ear piecerings, they are dam good people and would do anything for you in a time of need.just because they choose to be different then you doesnt give you the right to judge, so get a life or keep your thoughts to your self. the BIBLe says he who is with out sin cast the first stone.

I'll make you a deal.
I will keep my thoughts about your appearance to myself.
All you gotta do is understand that a lot of us here are 50 plus and don't think all the tattoos, piercings, etc are the sign of good character. So when you come to one of us looking for a job we will keep our thoughts about your appearance to our selves. And we wont mention it had a lot to do with the reason you didn't get the job.
Fair enough?

No matter how unfair it might seem for the world to 'judge', it's a reality---always was, always will be. We all make judgements in every decision we make, in all aspects of life. That's at the heart of the tatoo thing: an excess of tatoos, or piercings of any degree, reflects a sad lack of judgement. It says that the wearer, no matter how many other good qualities he or she may possess, lacks the discernment or discipline to make a proper choice about such a pointless thing as a permanent tatoo. It is assumed that this lack will carry over into other aspects of that person's decision-making.

The only thing that gets me is the amount of money they use up to "individualize" themselves,..... $1800 in tats and $350 in piercings is a tally I got from only ONE guys art work
.....Man! that would buy a LOT of tractor parts!

A pretty woman doesnt need tatoos. The tatoos degrade their beauty.I notice that all outlaws seem to have tatoos that Id them when they hold up a bank.A friends grand daughter had a stud in the side of her nose.I told her she would never get a good paying job with that thing in her nose.Next time I saw her the stud was gone. She is a fine looking girl but the stud made her look like a freak.Tatoos do fade and spread as you get older.

Considering that you wouldn't hire a black man if he was the best person for the job, you might be passing by an excellent worker just because they had tattoo's or piercings. If I was doing the hiring, I'd try to hire to most qualified person for the job instead of the best looking. If the person was good at their job and could make money for the company why not consider them? You could hire a good looking person that would have trouble giving away free samples. You can't lump everyone with a tattoo or piercing into the freak show category. There's a lot of very successful people with tattoo's and piercings.

I have to laugh at how this got onto Tatoos. I see some of the most gawdy stuff come in with temporary labor we utilize at work. We had one girl working with us in early July. She was quite a looker with a body to match. She didn't have any "hardware" but she did have a few tats. I was down at the line hauler's desk helping Joe with some shipping orders and this girl was working nearby loading boxes into the box former. She bent over to pick up a bundle of boxes and I noticed a tatoo all the way across her lower back just above her..well you know where. Kinda' like a fancy filagree or lace design. Joe cleared his throat and mentioned that's called a 'tramp stamp'. OK then I learned something new that day. I was later told by a guy who would probably know, her front side is even more interesting. Those guys sure had a good time yukking it up at the old man's expense!

Not near as much of a hard a$$ as the judge he was going to see, who has a real hang-up on appropriate attire and appearance in court. Thats why I have him the heads up.

A cartoon that I remember from the 80's was appropriately named the "Born Loser". He was a middle aged portly fellow that was in a locker room with just a towel on. When asked why he had a tatoo of a fat gal in a bikini on his chest, he replied---

"She wasn't fat when I weighed 145#".

Enough Said!

No, I don't think someone who discrimates against another race based only on their skin color is any position to be giving advice on the subject of judging another person based on their appearance. I happened to remember an old post from several month's ago.

Yes, tattoos do fade. Had one on my stomach of a chicken. Checked it this morning and all that was left was the azzhole.

Actually I have a friend that is black, Honest Christian guy. I would hire a black person IF....They were honest, and could speak proper English. I have a problem with the Ebonics crap, the clothes, the disgusting music, the crime of the inner city.
I think of it this way:
20% of the black folks are honest decent people.
80% of the blacks are nnalert that want a handout from Whitey.

Was flying out a national last year and a stripper - looking girl in front of me was having to go through the metal detector several times. They got her on the other side and used the wand on her. two headlight trim rings and a hood ornament.

My LOL was the Chief of Probation for a District in WV. She said at first she would tell Probationers to dress good for court but later she quiet. Said let the Judge see them as they are.

Have you told your "friend" that you think only 20% of blacks are decent people? You pretty much confirmed what I said.

I have trouble with alot of body art. Gal down the road in a rent house and her old man are into it big time. THey are both unemloyeed and on my way home from work usually they both can bee seen out side the body art shop on fridays. She showed up on the porch the other night broke down no gas money. SHe said she made a mistale and spent her budget on a new tat.

Theres a guy near where I work hes a big guy pretty nice fellow but after a breakup with his girlfreind he got his whole face tattoed. Hes asked us for a job several times. but we just cant hire some one that looks like that as the company we work for has high standards for employees public appearances.

I get to hear al lthat self expression crap and dont buy into it. Most folks here that dress like that and have peircings and tats all they do is lay on their parents couch and watch tv all day. WHen I was 21 I had a good job for a construction company as an operator/mechanic. I was harrased by a laborer that was my age for not having any tattoos. He was fresh out of the Navy and had gotten some tats and peircings. ONe in particular was a big ring in the eyebrow. He had been asked to remove it and every day mid day he would install it again.

He had a bad habit of sliding down a ladder like he did in the Navy. One hot day I was in my excavator digging a trench out from where he was working at. He slid down a verticle personell ladder and a section of number 9 Tie wire was exposed from a rebar net and hooked up. As he slid past it he hung the eye brow ring and pulled it out. He bawled like a baby.

Yep, he has the same opinion of many of the "inner city" people.
I will call a spade a spade when I see fit.

I will take a guess that you have body piercings and tattoos? Am I right?

(quoted from post at 17:12:13 10/15/11) We've seen the results of the "anything goes" mentality in our society. Don't like it much.

Agree 100%

Tattoo and piercings are popular around here, and several of the people I work choose this. Some have just one or two, but others can't seem to get enough. Absolutely disgusting in many cases. For me, tattoos and piercings are not attractive, and I feel people are degrading themselves by doing so.

For the posters who mention money spent on tattoos/piercings vs paying bills, the 'new toy' will always get paid before the real bills do. I work around and with these people, they will openly admit this, even to the point of bragging about it. I can also tell you where other money is spent: the bars/liquor store and drug dealers fund mostly. Many of these people will also let lots of other people use their body for other uses, I think you know what I mean. Completely disgusting.

Spade a spade? ....folks,..let's not get hateful. Liking or disliking the appearance of body art, or body rings are something to have opinion or debate on, but race is not a choice. Never should it be held against or upon anyone. God, ....is our creator, he makes no mistakes, we are continuously tested by him, and people of any color should always be considered a human.

You'd be sadly mistaken. I've got a few scars from cuts and burns but no piercings or tattoos at all. You're calling a spade before you know anything about them or their abilities. Does your friend think only 20% of blacks are honest decent people? I'm guessing you get a lot of your views from your parents? That's the sad part.

You dont live anywhere near the city of Detroit do you?
I live 50 miles from that cesspool.
The lowlifes that inhabit that Godforsaken rathole is appalling.
The state of Michigan is cutting welfare benefits for tens of thousands in this state (about fricken time) These leaches will be migrating out to the suburbs to loot and steal.
Over half of the welfare checks go to the city of Detroit and the city of Flint.
These inner city people wonder why they cant get jobs, well it is like this:
Your English is horrible. (Ebonics doesnt cut it)
You dress like a clown.
You are lazy.
You have Zero skills.
That sums it up.
What state do you live in Mr. Very Sad?
BTW: I am sure your mom is glad that you dont have tattoos and body piercings.

I remember that the fellows and friends I grew up with that had tatoos did jail time. Those who didnt have tatoos never spent time in jail. There is something in the personalities that makes them do strange things.I was town constable in 1978.6 of the young fellows who ran wild died early. All were risk takers, none made it to 30.I remember some of them others have faded from memory. One hung himself in jail, another died in state prison, another went thru the ice with a snow mobile,One turned a car over while driving drunk,Ended up in a wheel chair. He had a long oui record.Another is homeless. He spent time in state prison. He bought a van with no brakes, went through a stop sign and killed 2 people. One who ran around on a motor cycle with no license or registration lost his life on one a few years later.

I heard once that people with visable piercings,
like face, lips, nose tongue, are people of low
self esteem!

Speaking of tatoos, here's a story.

Once Saturday afternoon at the super hooch in Korea, myself and a fellow medic were walking along when I noticed one of our troops with a bandage on his arm. We stopped to see what happened since I just came from the aid station and hadn't noticed him. Turns out he had just got a tattoo that morning and was told to keep the bandages on for a while. He was proud though and wanted to show us. He peeled off the bandage in just a little bit of pain and there was a cool looking eagle holding a banner in it's talons that said U.S. Amry! Not Army, but Amry. Lol! He hadn't even noticed yet and I even had to look down at my uniform to make sure I was seeing that right. ...and then shared my discovery with the poor guy! Such a sad moment for him.

I haven't thought about that in years. Thanks!

I agree with most of the other "old fogeys" who think that tattoos and piercings are a negative. When I've interviewed people for jobs, I can tell you that numerous individuals were NOT considered solely based on their appearance. Whether it was dressing like they were about to work on their car, had tattoos or piercings, or whatever. Had a young lady who was fine until she answered a question and I could see the stud in her tongue. She was automatically put in the reject pile. They'll never know it. We've always had more than one qualified applicant so it was not like someone less qualified was hired over them. They simply did not get the job, no reason stated or necessary.

As someone mentioned about "our youth", mohawks, crew cuts, long hair, wild clothes, all those "fads" didn't live with us the rest of our lives. I've got shoulder length hair in my wedding picture, but no employer ever sees that. My 3 daughters all considered getting tattoos when they were around 18 but I cautioned them that if they want to be professionals instead of working at 7-11, they'd better think twice. They all passed on them and are glad they did (2 attorneys and a potential doctor). My wife is a nurse and also discussed the cases of infection she's seen from piercings and tattoos.

And to "very sad", yes, it's your right to get a tattoo or piercing, so go right ahead. But don't be surprised or upset if you are discriminated against. That's our right as well.
