Bringing the dog with me

My dog is feeling under the weather from a series of vacinations, and I have to go away for a work training for 2 weeks. The vet agreed with me to take him with me versus leaving him at the kennle for 2 weeks since the additional stress will not help him recover. I cancelled my plane reservations and will eat the costs for airfare and driving 650 miles, and my boss will probably not be too happy with me. I am attending the training anyway and no extra costs to my employer, in fact I am saving them $$$$!

I cannot let down one of my best friends! He is getting older
(11) and to me, it is the only and right thing to do! Plus the training will be more bearable and I do not have to worry about my mut. I even have a pet friendly hotel that is less expensive than the original accomodations. Many people have not experienced a strong bond with an animal, which is their loss. I do not think my boss will understand, but oh well.

You're doing the right thing for the dog and you. I hope you have plans for the dog when you're at the training sessions. Most motels don't want you to leave them in the motel room.
I took my Black Lab with me overnight last year and we stayed in a motel. He wasn't used to the noises, cars and doors slamming, people talking etc. I had a heck of time keeping him quiet, didn't get much sleep until after 2AM.
I still enjoyed having him along as he's a good passenger. The previous Black Lab was a good dog but a poor passenger. {could not sit still) when he was young until he died at 12 1/2.

have a good friend that watches my mastiff if I have to leave town. he gets spoiled when he's there. his wife makes me bring him by once in awhile. he's too big to ride in the single cab and a little big and stubborn to stay on a leash.

We took our Blue Heeler with us to buy some cows. Figured we would leave her spend the night in the trailer. About midnight my son heard her yip outside our window. went out and there she was at our window. Not only had she escaped from the trailer she had located the room we were in and there was no outside door we had went in through the lobby snd down a hall to the room. The end of the hall had a outside door that opened from the inside so I opened it and let them in. Spent the rest of the night without a yip. gitrib

This tells me a lot about a person who will take such good care of his pet. You are right we sure get attached to our pets. This is one reason I never go on a vacation. I stay home with the animals. The wife goes without me, but always has other relatives around. reason number two. I don't like sleeping in a strange bed, and eating strange food. Enjoy your trip with your best friend. Stan

Thanks for the replies and kind words. Those blue heelers are smart, no suprise that he escaped to find you.

The mut is under the covers recouping. When he is not feeling well, his head is on the pillow and between the sheets. Border Collie mix, not much of a cow dog, deathly afraid of the heifers, but a great friend.

Not only did you help your dog, you didn't get radiated or felt up at the airport, and you also have less chance of getting skin cancer. Sounds like a win win deal to me.

(quoted from post at 18:55:57 10/13/11) a little big and stubborn to stay on a leash.

have you tried a harness???? Used to have rottweilers and they always pulled and choked themselves with a collar and leash and would wear you out. Someone suggested a harness and everyone was instantly happier and no pulling.....

Heifer....Enjoy your trip......

nah--only time I need to take him anywhere is to the vet--he gets to run on quite a few acres and hasn't left our fence. he mostly stays in the house. last time I looked for a harness couldn't find one that would fit. I'm a fairly strong fella, but that dog is around 200 pounds and if he really wants to go somewhere he is a handful. I couldn't imagine taking him around alot of people-he likes attention, but usually puts the fear of god in people when he comes running up to them due to his size. another not mentioned issue with travelling with him is the slobber he gets while riding shotgun with his big old head out the window--streaks the whole side of my truck when we run to town to grab a burger--he takes his dry without vegetables.

Most people do not under stand the strong bond that dogs have with their people. My dog knows when we are going somewhere. Most dogs are much smarter than we think. My first Border Collie didnt like to ride at all.The one I have now knows many words .You can spell the word ride or truck and he will run to the door.He has a small bell by the kitchen door that he rings when he has to go out.He learned to do this at 10 weeks old.Dogs can read your moods.
