Dusk to dawn light effect

Have you ever noticed how a dusk to dawn light in the vicinity of soybeans affects their growth? They grow taller and stay green longer. The strip in the middle is caused by the shadow of the pole.

You know, that never 'dawned' on me before. The shade from the pole is the proof. Ultradog, I got a chuckle from that one. I wonder if anyone would notice the tall 'growth' under my yardlight next year LOL? Jim

Since you aren't too far from me, I'm going to believe you. :D

Is it that noticable every year, or is the picture a rare year?? I've never heard of it but I can see how it would happen.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I'm going to print the picture off to see if anybody else has anything like that.

Thanks!!

Saw a field like this near here just this morning. Picked all the beans, except a few patches like this near some light poles. Just went around the green...

Saw that years ago when a bean field was next to a car dealer. Circles of green beans by each light.

Northern soybeans use the length of daylight as a trigger to stop growing & mature. With the good overnight lighting, they never get tht signal. Southern soybeans work differently, so probably have less of an effect from this? (Determinate vs in-determinate soybeans...)

The pole shade gap is pretty cool.

Read an article about palm trees dieing in South Florida cities of "lethal yellowing". After years of tests, turned out that the generally accepted reason for the problem was essentially that due to the prevalence of 24 hour high intensity lighting in urban areas, the palms got no rest and literally "burned themselves out".

Here in WV we call that stink bugs,Every field that hasent been sprayed looks exactly like the pictures.Stink bugs bite the plant and the beans never produce causing the plants to stay green,Its usally 50 ft area around the boundry of the field,Thousand of acres in the county, last year was worst. This is the first fear spray was avaible,House have been affected bad, these stink bugs has very bad odors

If'n it's "stink bugs" then 'splain why the beans are only green where the yard light hits? Bugs would infest the whole field.

I've got a 40 acre field next to a trucking company with big lights in the parking lot that borders me.Mine are the same, probably 30ft out from the light poles. The only place there green is near the three light poles for probably 100 yards.

That is interesting. Glad you made the connection and brought it up. I see a patch of beans like that every year in a field along a road near town. Always puzzled me as to the cause. Buildings are on the other side of the road. Next time I'm through there I'll look to see if there is a pole with street lights over the beans.

Soybeans are very responsive to the length of daylight/light. They notice when the days start to get shorter and adjust their growth and reproductive cycle accordingly. They are some of the smartest plants on the planet. Corn, on the other hand, is not so smart.
