Recently acquired this pickup to pull our equipment trailer (see - it is tractor related). The engine is the 6.0 Powerstroke. PU has 131,000 miles.

Gotten some comments that this is a troublesome truck. What's the experience from you guys?

Thx

Has the heads and gaskets been done? If not you will be doing it some time. I would get a upgraded EGR cooler or EGR delete kit to prevent the future problems with the heads and gaskets. If you keep it stock or keep the EGR clean the EGR valve regularly as they get crusty and stick causing all kinds of problems. Once you get the emmission stuff under control the make a pretty decent engine but it can get costly to get there.

Look for the Oct 2011 issue of Diesel Power magazine they had good article in there about making the 6.0 Power Stroke last.Mostly that magazine is about souping up diesel pickups but they do have some usefull stuff in there too. the cover says DIESELPOWERMAG.COM so maybe you can find it there too. I loaned my copy out or I would tell you the page.

I had one with that many miles on it, no problems. Other people had them with all kinds of major problems. I would not soup mine up if I wanted to get a lot of miles. I think the higher boost was hard on the head components.

My company truck is really close to that, but is a 05..

The last winter, they did all the injectors and I believe either cleaned or replaced the EGR valve (the truck ran HORRIBLE when cold, and smoked like crazy) Been pretty good since then.

When it was new, it had some work done, but I can't remember what it was back then.. I think it was something to do with the turbo.. Seems like it wouldn't "boost up".

Other than that, it's just had "normal routine repairs" (the same stuff you'd do to a Chevy, Dodge, or just about anything else with wheels) to the best of my knowledge.

All in all, I like the truck I have.. Only thing I've noticed is I have that, and a 86 with a 7.3 IDI in it.. I burn the same fuel from the same station in them, and the 6.0 seems to have a different "smell" to the exhaust (not that I make it a habit of smelling it, but when you walk around the truck when it's running..) and seems to put out a lot more exhaust than the older truck at an idle.. But that probably has nothing to do with anything.. But I pay attention to a lot of stuff to try to detect problems before they are major problems..

Change the coolant. It should be tested every 18K miles and serviced accordingly. Neglected coolant will result in a clogged oil cooler that then takes out the EGR cooler. Put a boost gauge on it. NEVER exceede 25 psi boost or you will be putting head gaskets in it.
