This picture may not be that unusual, but what is unusual is the fact that there have been 2 other bucks taken off this spot with the same configuration. One of two taken has the drop antler on the left side, the other on the right. DNR suspected car injury with the first one, possible gene pool with the second....now the third.

Probably gene pool. In my area, there are a lot of whitetail bucks with antlers that don't match from one side to the other.

There's a term for it, non-conforming or something, but I can't think of it right now.

I'd say gene pool...... Kinda like "I can tell by the looka your forehead, your mom and dad are cousins"........
We have plenty of deer here but they all look good, one of the responsibilities of the hunters is to keep the herds looking good by harvesting.... IE., they'll watch a pair of twin fawns and kill the one that develops slower, kill any that are off color (light to albino), bucks with uneven antlers, etc.......

Yup. Non typical is the term.
If this is 3rd generation of this malformed rack I would suspect gene pool as well. Not sure how it would have got started though.

we let the young first time hunters cull those from the herd around here. paying hunters don't want them for obvious reasons, but my 14 yr old nephew doesn't mind taking the bad genetics when he gets to hunt. Cull Deer with non-typical antlers like that are a good start for young hunters.

I got one on the camera last week that has a perfect six on one side and a ball of horn on the other. I'll have to post that one. It's pretty interesting.
