I agree the 870 is a good gun. Interchangable chokes will allow you to chage out the chokes for different conditions. Also for not a lot of money you can get the rifled slug barrel thats easy to swap out. I've put a lot of rounds through on and never had a problem. I got that gun in 1965 and a nephew is still hunting with it. I went over to an auto cause of back problems.

The Ithica is a godd gun too just harder to come by.

depends on how close or far you want to be. open choke for slug--any other for slugs is not good idea. modified choke for mid range--full for far. best advice--get an assortment. put target at distance you want to shoot, thensee what the pattern does-- remington 870 is hard to beat--mossberg 500 does okay as well. but would not trade my semi auto browning for anything.

Been a while, but I bought a new mossberg 500 with a slug barrel and an adjustable choke barrel for half the price an 870 was going for.....

Dave that 870 that my nephew has now was used by me at Ft Riley when hunting with a friend in 75-76. He was shooting a Mossberg that was new. When I again hunted with him in the late 80's at Ft Know he ask me if that was the same gun. He was on his 3rd Mossberg at the time and did not do as much shooting as I did.

(quoted from post at 19:31:19 10/07/11) They let you have guns in Germany/Europe?

wasn't over here my entire life...... And, yes, you can have guns if you have a permit...Don't have one myself because the process isn't worth the trouble.......

Maverick Arms Model 88, built by Mossberg, gets a lot of praise among my friends for being the best pump shotgun available for the money. With screw-in chokes being available in everything from rifled slug to extra-full choke, why even worry about another barrel?

Recent Wal-Mart ad has that shotgun, with black synthetic stock, for $187 thru 10/8 [Saturday].

It is still the same. On sale a 500 with 2 barrels costs less than a 870 Express (a 870 with a crude finish). I was always a Remington guy untill the Freedom Group bought them, now you couldn't give me the clumsey clunky junk they build. Mossberg sells barrels for the 500 at about 1/3 the cost of Remington. Weaver makes a side mount for a scope that is a easy fit on the 500. Rifled barrels with adjustable iron sights?, Mossberg makes them and they are affordable. In line Muzzel Loader barrel, yep, $109 when I got mine. If I could only have one gun, it would be a 500.

I have an 870 that my Father gave me when I was a kid: 3 barrels-vent rib with interchangeable chokes, a smooth slug barrel and a rifled slug barrel. I have had Mossbergs which are very nice and alot of gun for the money, and an Ithaca. The Ithaca was a great gun but it was the lightweight and it packed a whallup (all 12 guages I am talkning here), the one I will never part with is the 870 It is one of the best guns I have ever owned, it is on my list of all time keepers:
Rem. 870 wingmaster 12 guage 2 and 3/4 inch
Rem. Model 7 7mm-08
Ruger 10/22
Ruger N0 Red Label 20 guage
Ruger Security Six 4" in .357
Thompson Ceneter .54 Caliber Renegade Flintlock
Colt 1911A1 .45

Remington sells the 870 pump 12gage. $300 or so. Slug barrel is extra.
Mossberg sells the 835 ulti-mag, slug barrel is extra. Also about $300.

If you really want a nice rifle there are thousands of used guns at pawn shops, and gun stores. You can get a nice Marlin or Winchester rifle .30-30 caliber for under $300 usually.
Go to www.gunbroker.com and browse around.
I go on this site everyday.

I agree. I have one of those Ithaca pumps (16 ga.) I bought it when I was a teenager about 50 years ago. It has never jammed and I still shoot it several times a year to knock squirrels out of my pecan trees. TDF

If you want a Remingon find a good older 870 Wingnaster, they are a much better gun than the 870 express they sell today, there re many good shotguns but I bought an 870 Wingmaster 30 years ago and it will be with me until my death

I have a Winchester Model 1200 pump 20 guage that is nothing but junk- shell extraction problems regardless of shell brand.

My favorite is my WInchester 1897 12 guage- been in the family 3 generations, bomb proof action and a great shooter. I have heard of, but not seen, Chinese clones of these guns that are supposed to work well.

My slug gun is a cheap Bolt action Mossberg 12 guage, scoped ( not for distance but for my miserable eyesight)

I have a 20 gauge 870 wingmaster that was my dads from the late 50s. I am going to get my boy started on it with clay pigeons.

I have a 20ga. 870 wingmaster I bought new in 1958 and Dad's 12ga. 870 that he bought earlier than that not sure what year.

The older shot guns have much better workmanship.Ive looked at Mossbergs, very rough.A friend gave me a Stevens pump gun years ago , its a nice gun.I like the Ithaca, its a well made gun.I see them at gun shows often.Later models have inter changable barrels. Its all steel.I have an Ithaca double my uncle gave me over 40 years ago.Ithaca has been in and out of business for several years, the last models they made were overpriced.

Only good shotgun for me is model 12
Winchester. Costly and great. Take gunsmith with you and look it over inside and out. Oldie but goodie. Dave

Started out on a 16 gauge single shot stevens at age 10, went to side by side 12 gauge Crescent, then 20 gauge 870 Remington, 20 ga model 5 Browning, side by side 12 gauge Stoeger (junk), 1187 remington 12 gauge. Then picked up a ultra light 12 gauge Benelli, holy cow, I love it. At my old age it carries so nice, shoots any load flawlesly, weighs less than my 20 gauge, recoil no problem. Sold the Browning to my son for 5 times what I paid for it . It was his idea, not mine.

The Stevens 94 single shot 12 GA my wife gave me for my birthday is the best shot gun ever.Cost her 30 bucks.
