Good Grinder

The Crafstman 8" bench grinder I bought only a few year ago never did run in cold weather, it'd dog down if I actually usedit, so I had to wait for it to speed up again, and now the bearings are whining and going out.
Anybody recommend a GOOD RELIABLE grinder?

Look around for an old arbor grinder like they used for sickle bars. You can find stones for em and seeing as they are belt driven you can put a good sized motor on em. I picked up one in a junk shop about 10 years ago for 10 bucks. Sure gotta oil it manauly but it's a samm price to pay for a good grinder.

i bought a cheap HF grinder nearly 20 years ago-Used the snot out of it-still do.No problems or complaints.Although,When pushing real hard on a big piece of steel,I sometimes wish for more power.

I have a dewalt 8 in. It too takes a few seconds to get up to speed. Has never failed me.

I have a 30+ year old 10 inch craftmans radial saw. As saws go I think near worthless. Good for cutting aluminum soffets and that's about it. Not a precision saw. I put an 8 inch grinding wheel on it. Put sheet metal over the wood table of the saw. The saw motor has around 3 hp. You'll never stop it with a grinding wheel.

I got the idea of using my radial arm saw by look at the professional grinder designed for sharpening mower blades and costing around $500.

I use it mostly for sharpening 2 ft woods mower blades and it works great. Been using it for a few years and no problems. This may sound crazy to some, but don't knock before you try it. I leave the blade cover on the saw too.

Bought mine at Ace Hardware. It has more power and is a better made grinder than most China made bench grinders.

FBH44 My son and I both have cheepees from Harbor Freight. A little underpowered but have not had any problems in the last 5 or 6 years. We dont use them every day.

Both my bench grinder are labeled as Delta, purchased at Farm & Fleet [Blains Supply ]in ILL., and as stated on each, made in Taiwan. One is at least 20 years old and the other about 18 years old. Each have had the stones replaced several times and even tho seemingly under powered when pushed they have given good service. No problems with either since being put in use.

That's what I use too, Rick. Mine's pretty old - says Western Auto on it. I've used it for 40 years, and it was old when I got it. I have it mounted on a post with the motor below it. Seems like it's easier to use without the motor in the way.

I have 3 of them things and all of them I payed less then $7 for. Got one from a friend for $7 and had to oil up the bearing and remove the switch but works great you just plug it in when you need it. Another one is an older Black and Decker that was given to me and it works good. Then I have one I picked up at auction that has a wheel made for emery cloth and love it for working on knife blades

I built my own using some bearings that fit a machine we no longer had at the plant. Belt drive so I can put a bigger motor on it anytime and the pulley is smaller than a motor so it's easier to use. Right now it has an old 1/2 h.p. on it and works fine.

Yes!
I just do not understand folks who continually run to Harbor Freight to buy cheap junk.
Do a search on Craigslist for bench grinder.
There is bound to be a good used grinder out there. Maybe not a Sioux but a good one nevertheless.

THeres a good US made grinder available but most wont pay the price.Thats why there are so many junk grinders being sold.

I got one sold by Grainger I bought at an auction and paid about $ 250.00 for it. You can shut it off and come back 5 minutes later and the motor is still winding down.

I'll second...or third... the Delta. If the 25 or so years I've had mine, I've replaced the toggle switch once- other than that, no fuss and I have really leaned into it. Obvious side note- bolt it down, 'cause it will dance like Michael Jackson all around the bench otherwise

The GRAINGER recommended by "huntinggreen2day"
is one of the best, if you can afford it. I've
had one for 15 years...no problems!
